I don't know what they're waiting for other than a 0.9 rating
and that's coming soon if they don't make some changes.
If they're going to stay local during the afternoon drive
they need to make a change.
I love Arlene but all too often her topics are too top heavy
with national issues (I see that as the Air UnAmerica influence)
and she has a really annoying habit of scheduling interviews with
people from the arts after talking war for two hours.
Her topics and programming are too chopped up.
The show has no flow to it.

When in doubt, time for another episode of attack WHJJ.....getting so very old. maybe they will call a moratorium on the ever so boring attacks on WHJJ over and over and over...ad nauseum.

We are just amazed at HJJ and the terrible line ups. Their the only other show in town. Their numbers are horrible(No Spin). We wish for a change. Enough said.

Doc, why are you a shill for that fading station??
A personal issue with you?
Sure sounds it. You should be embarrassed.

Not a shill, just using common sense here. It gets really old and you aren't being forced to listen to it. Yet you feel its necessary to go after them on a regular basis for reasons only that they made a change in format that you don't like. We get it. Some of you think WHJJ made a mistake. My counter is that i don't believe thats true because Providence now has an alternative to conservative radio. Not everybody thinks Providence needs 2. Im glad CC made the choice to switch one here. They need to do some work to the schedule and they are not in danger of failure...although thats what you want. The people there are either aboard with the changes or they can apply at a conservative station. I could say you guys are shills for WPRO as you constantly crow about how great WPRO is...but it isn't. And last and least, we all know about the value of 12+ but you guys continue to do what Brian Baloney does on his blog....despite your all knowing this you continue to make this a big deal.

We get it, you don't like that WHJJ flipped to progressive radio. We get it that you don't like the AAR programming. We get it. Time to move along, dont you think?

Doc, can you explain why liberal programming is NOT
appealing to people in one of the most liberal states in America?
And you can try to paint your pretty picture about WHJJ but the
reality is the switch to Air Amercia has been a disaster.
The ONLY thing holding that stations' ratings head above water
is Arlene Violet. How ironic is that, liberal Doc??
BTW, Geoff Charles is an embarrassment. What is up with THAT?
Just a guess but burned out old hippies don't listen to A.M. radio
at night so who is supposed to be Charles' target audience?
What's happened to WHJJ, the once thriving and important radio
station is quite sad.
WHJJ is now irrelevant in the Providence market and it doesn't
get much worse than that.

OK, what is your primary issue with WHJJ? The lineup or the ideology? If you think it's the lineup, then I'd agree with you. 920 is trying to be more of a left leaning talker, as opposed to a full blown liberal talk station. It's not that "liberal talk doesn't work," it's way too soon to make that call. It takes two to three years to build a talk station. Look how long it took WTKK to become a major competitor to WRKO in Boston. At least four years, and they run conservative talk on one of the best FM signals in the market!

In the case of WHJJ, the station hasn't fully committed to the format. It's way too moderate. The station needs a full liberal identity to attract progressive listeners, and more of a local presence.

Sorry, but Don Imus' show is tired, and he's no liberal. I'd go local in that slot, with a progressive minded team who could take calls and add local flavor to hot-button national issues. I'd also add plenty of news/weather/traffic updates so that listeners wouldn't feel the need to go to WPRO for that info.

Second, move Springer to late nights (or drop him altogether) and put in Stephanie Miller. Her show is much more entertaining and definitely liberal. Leave Franken and Arlene's shows as is, but I'd bring in a sidekick for Violet to take the edge off of her schill delivery. Again, I'd add plenty of news/weather and traffic in this daypart.

At night, run all four hours of Rhodes and dump Charles. At 10PM, I'd either run Mike Malloy live or rerun Springer there. I'd rather have Malloy, who is the left wing edition of Savage (meaning the lunatic fringe.)

Right now the station is not generating any passion, because of the personality lineup, not the ideology. If anything, the station should be even more liberal, and local wherever possible. In markets where the progressive talker has been on a good signal with a couple of local shows, the stations have gotten off to fast starts. With the right approach, WHJJ could do the same. They won't go anywhere with their present lineup.

I don't think i ever painted a pretty picture, I painted a fair picture of WHJJ.
Diaster is framed by your beliefs. I just don't see CC calling this a disaster. A few months back during another of your rants on WHJJ, a WHJJ employee said that despite the changes, all was well...no layoffs, no ad revenue lost, etc. My other question which i have asked a few times is why do you critize the station employees and the quality of the personnel just because the format changed? If you liked the employees and personnel when it was conservative, what changed? Why is the news group so bad now..when nothing has changed except the shows?

> The ONLY thing holding that stations' ratings head above
> water
> is Arlene Violet.

>> Are you going on opinion or evidence. If you have seen the arbitrons, at least share the hour by hour comparison (not sharing the ratings data to not cause problems for Radio-Info). If you know this to be true, I simply say prove it. And if Arlene was holding up WHJJ that means she has to be kicking Yorke's sorry ass. An easy ass to kick BTW. The only thing holding up WPRO is Rush and the Red Sox...and maybe Savage ....but Savage is so insane now, im shocked if anyone listens to him foam at the mouth.

The station is living in two worlds...and you can't have it both ways....the station needs to become fully progressive..because Imus and Charles and the crap on the weekend aren't progresive shows mostly. There's only one block of time I surrender on and thats Rush...I know Franken won't beat Rush head to head for now...otherwise, theres no reason Arlene couldn't move to mornings to crush Steve Krappy Kass and have Randi crush Yorke.

The morning show on WPRO is rephehensible..but WHJJ offers no good alternative and no I don't think Morning Sedition is better than a good local show...but WPRO has a sh**ty local show. KPOJ Portland and KKZN in Denver got solid boosts in ratings by adding a local Thom Hartmann show in Portland and Jay Marvin in Denver on mornings. This to me solidifies the proof that a good local morning lead in works well for progressive stations. Tom Betz has been the one to prove that point many times.

Without Rush and the Sox, where would paper tiger WPRO be now? they also make a mistake using Springer in the mornings in a Blue state. Stephanie Miller, Thom hartmann, etc would be fine but WHJJ has a talker who can easily move to mornings, Arlene Violet. This would allow WHJJ to kick Yorke with 4 hours of Randi rhodes....

How ironic is that, liberal Doc??
I see no irony.

> BTW, Geoff Charles is an embarrassment. What is up with
> THAT?

Finally we agree on something, Charles should be fired. Its a travesty that he is given air time. Springer or Majority Report should be fine before Mike Malloy.

> Just a guess but burned out old hippies don't listen to A.M.
> radio
> at night so who is supposed to be Charles' target audience?

No one I think. Charles is no liberal/progressive. He is just horrible and I don't like him. He blocks 2 valuable hours of Randi Rhodes currently.

> What's happened to WHJJ, the once thriving and important
> radio
> station is quite sad.

Your opinion....you have nothing to prove what you say ..if you do please share.

> WHJJ is now irrelevant in the Providence market and it
> doesn't
> get much worse than that.

Only to you conservatives, otherwise you again are speaking with conjecture and not substance. The only thing i can say is WHJJ needs to be progressive or not. The current schedule is a nightmare as is...a little adjustment and all is well.(my opinion)

I only disagree on one thing, Id like to see Randi live in Drive time, she isn't available live to anyone in this area. I have been pushing the mgmt in Boston at WKOX to do it but they make a mistake in running Ed Shultz live and Randi on delay in a blue state. Arlene could kick butt in the mornings....

This area needs a good progressive local host. WHJJ doesn't have an on-staff answer for this. Maybe simulcast Jay Marvin until further notice. and thisTom would love me but if they want to have an additional moderate host...Jay Diamond is available for weekends....and hes local.

That being said, we agree very much that WHJJ has got to quit living in two worlds.

WHJJ does have a good progressive in Keri Rodriguez, who would do a very interesting show, but of course she is never used. I don't understand why they don't do ANYTHING with her. Instead we get crappy Howie Bart who seems to be their end all be all fill in for Arlene Violet. The guy is so bush league it's not even funny -- he's an embarassment. They don't seem to want to use the talent that they have and they're killing what's left of the audience by refusing to step up to the plate.

VERY good point, Keri is bright witty and would make a great AM host. She should be allowed to sub for Arlene as well. I forgot about her. Thanks for reminding me that they do have an in-house progressive for the AM.

Heck just to get rid of horrible Charles, id put her in his slot as well.

Still beating WHJJ's amateur hours by several ratings points.
