Have some questions about small KY stations

I cannot tell from online if WKIC 97.9 in Hayden is news or hot AC. Has anyone heard it lately?

Also has anybody heard WIVY Ivy 96.3 in Morehead, KY? I cannot find any website or logo for this one.

I'm going to finally be in Kentucky next week, hopefully going around the state and hear all these mysterious stations.

Another thing, does WLLK Lake 102.3 in Somerset sound almost exactly like the The Max in Louisville? Or do they play different songs?

WKIC 97.9 in Hyden, Ky is hot AC. If you are in the area stop by Cumberland Ky, about an hour from Hyden, and listen to WCPM A M 1280. They bill themselves as HOT COUNTRY and are really good.

WKIC is WSGS's sister station and is based out of Hazard. Is WKIC still broadcasting in mono?

I haven't heard WLLK for quite some time, but when Clear Channel owned it, they were at 93.9 and programmed hot AC using their Mix programming model...only a little softer. Then again, this was also when 102.3 was CHR as Kiss-FM.

The equipment for WKIC is in Hazard and it is a sister station to WSGS but the station is licensed to Hyden. I should have mentioned that in my earlier post.

Both WSGS and WKIC are in mono. I remember when 93.9 was Lake 93.9 I think... Now K93.

Hazard was unique about twenty-five years ago. The commercial FM was mono while both AM's were broadcasting in stereo.

Around 1990, 93.9 was "DJ94" doing a rock leaning Top 40 with live jocks but it was short lived. About a year later they went on the bird with United Station's "Adult Rock".

I think the main reason WKIC and WSGS are mono has to do with signal penetration in the hollers. For some reason stereo does not do as well in the mountains as it does in flat land.

The reason that WKIC and WSGS do not broadcast in stereo is the due to the fact that stereo does not penetrate the hollers as well as mono.

Well I had a compromise with my dad who's taking me around and we won't be hitting eastern KY un fort. It's just too much wear on his 10 year old car and also my grandpa says it's a dangerous area full of hill billies though not sure I believe that. Unless they stream I won't be able to hear WKIC. Oh well, and hopefully from Jenkins, KY that Foxy 94.3 will stream soon. The listen live has been on there for over a year now. I think they're just waiting for royalities to settle down, otherwise the button wouldn't be on there right?

Talking about www.foxy943.com

Though my dad did say that next time he would take me to eastern KY so that was nice. Or when I get a driver's license, car, and insurance and time off work, I could do it myself and WV too.

Most of the roads I've driven in Eastern Kentucky are actually pretty good, although there are many hilly stretches. Unless if you're driving I-64 or I-75, or in a town at rush hour, traffic is generally not an issue.

In Kentucky it is common to see people driving over paved medians to make left turns-not sure if that's common everywhere else, but it is quite common in Kentucky.

I remember well, when WSGS tried to utilize the pilot they would shut it down a short time later. WEKH still has a devil of a time with stereo.

WIFX is also in HD and that doesn't do well in the hollers.

No kidding, IBOC has issues here in Western Kentucky where the terrain is more reasonable.

Somebody had a brain fifty years ago so the main highways are reasonable. I'm too young to remember KY 15 prior to reconstruction. I've been told it wasn't pretty. My only advice is to watch for coal trucks. They will surprise you coming around a curve.
