Have We Arrived At A Holding Pattern?

As a Collector, I state first that the sound quality of the new 180-gram Vinyl is so Goooooood, that it behooves one to again invest in a nice turntable. This is the new home/study/living room format for pre-recorded listening. As for portable, I have a pod unit, and burnt CDR's for the car. When the price of the down-load became equal=to or, in some cases, less<than the retail price of the CD,...the purchasing pattern changed! Is the shrunk-wrapped CD dead or just lower in rank? Radio doesn't use them for Broadcast, most that I know have bailed for files, and the often preached "CD Rot" also subtracts from owning large collections. As I have said before, either the labels lied about them being Archival or, at the time, they were unaware of their eventual environmental decay.
So,...are we in a holding pattern or is there some new tangible format...just around the corner?

...and another interesting point, regarding the new 180-gram Virgin Vinyl LP's: According to the Nielsen SoundScan, $9.2 Million, in sales, last year, up 52% from that of 2013. Still, means nothing for Broadcasting, but as a home/study/living room format, it seems to be finding some love, especially after you hear it!
Downloads dropped 9% for Albums, and 12% for songs.
