Hawaii Five-O coming back! - Reuters

A new Five-O would certainly be worth watching...if done right. They would have to try to capture the level of intensity of the original. If done with the same caliber of acting featured in a show like "The Unit," it might just work.

If it ends up on the CW, OTOH, it's a goner!

I hope that for realism's sake, whoever plays "McGarrett's son" will have the cement hair-sprayed pompadour, with the one carefully arranged lock of hair hanging down over the forehead.

Physically speaking, Josh Brolin would be perfect for the role, though it's hard to imagine him giving up a successful feature film career to star in episodic TV. Maybe he's waiting to play Dr. Steven Kiley's son in an updated version of Marcus Welby MD.

The only worthwhile thing about Hawaii 5-0 was the theme (and maybe a welcome respite from all the El A location cop shows of the period).

I always got a kick out of "Kono as Zulu". Or was it the other way around?

Actually, the idea of bringing back "Five-0" have been talked about for years, including a movie version that never materialized.

As for that "CHiPs" remake, there were plans in the works to revive it by having it set in San Francisco, but NBC passed on the proposed pilot.

And in 1999, TNT televised a reunion film / update called "CHiPs '99", which I think was also a pilot for a new series that never came.

Hawaii Five-O is probably my all time favorite show. So obviously, I STRONGLY disagree with landtuna's remark that only the theme song was worthwhile.

But while I'm kind of excited it may be coming back, I'm a little apprehensive about it. Has there ever been a successful revival of an old series other than the various Star Trek continuations?

I did not care for the 1988 version of Mission Impossible as much as I liked the original show. I know Raymond Burr made several Perry Mason films and James Garner made a few Rockford Files films, but for some reason I just never watched and I loved both of those shows.

So again, besides Star Trek what other continuation of old shows have worked? I'm not talking about remakes like Battlestar Galactica or the 2003 Dragnet series.

Where are the planning to film it? Cost to film a series in Hawaii is VERY expensive and very business unfriendly. Unions and super high costs everywhere. Very hard to put much money in to shows filmed in Hawaii because of the added "tax" of doing business there. Lost almost left after the first season to go to North Carolina until they gave them all kinds of tax breaks. If you think the cost isn't high, let me remind you that 3 years ago the City Bus Drivers went on strike because they felt their pay was too low. The starting salary was ONLY $65,000 a year. There is only so much money to spend on these things - and if you have to pay stupid money to Unions, you won't be the seeing it on the screen.

When Magnum PI was hitting its stride, they reportedly went to Jack Lord in an attempt to get him to reprise his McGarrett character for a two part show. Sadly, he decined....But then again, we all remember Jack in his prime...like James Arness.

Didn't stop them from referencing him, though. In a couple of early episodes, there's references to the "Five-0" state police (which was entirely fictional, iirc) and a cop named McGarrett. Thought that was pretty cool, actually. LOL.

Yeah, let's just hope that they don't turn it into a "reality" tv show ::)
Yeah we already have ONE Reality TV show based out of Hawaii (A&E's Dog: The Bounty Hunter) and it's doing quite well in the ratings right where it is, thank you very much (Of course it helps when it's one of the BEST shows in the genre too). :)

As for Hawaii Five-O, if Jerry Bruckheimer has ANYTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the it, I don't think we need to worry about the quality of this show. Look at what he's accomplished with the CSI trilogy as an example of his work. ;)

Cheers :D
