HAWAII FIVE-O LOSSES CONTINUE TO MOUNT

Its a typical cop show. Its not bad, but its not great. It is certainly better than CSI:Miami, which has become almost laughable and cartoonish. Its a nice excuse to not think for an hour and watching gun fire, explosions, and criminals. Will it ever win any writing or acting Emmys? Probably not. Its what you'd expect from an hour long cop show, though.

Have not tuned in since the premiere. I found the writing in episode one to be way over-the-top
and rather bad in general. And in my experience, series that start out with bad writing early on do not improve
with time. (the sole exception perhaps being Star Trek, TNG)

They seem to be aiming at a male audience, and now that they are up against
Monday Night Football I think the timeslot is proving to be an issue.

Luckily, for those of us in the West Coast, its not an issue, since the game is over about 90 minutes before Hawaii Five-0 starts. Since I'm guessing you're correct in the assertion that the show is geared towards males, CBS is probably expecting to see an uptick in male viewers (and consequently overall viewers) in January once the monday NFL games have ended. The majority of the remaining Monday night programs tend to be aimed at females to counterprogram Monday Night Football- so males will have little on broadcast to compete for their attention once football is over.

I guess all those constant promos worked well for CBS. My thoughts are that many people tuned in the first week just to see what all the fuss was about.

5 of the top 10 just shows how dull network TV has become. You've seen 3 CBS shows, you've seen them all.

BTW Hawaii continued to trend downwards AGAIN this week as it has since it's debut.

The OP wondering about Hawaii Five-O's ratings along with the network it airs on, might find this interesting:: H-5-O was the most DVR'ed show for the week ending September 26, actually adding more than 3 million viewers to its debut airing. Not only that, but CBS (does anyone still watch that network?) had five of the top 10 DVR'ed shows that week.

Two other notorious NBC Monday night shows were also the top DVR'ed in their time: Heroes and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Where is either of them today?

Good grief! It's a cop show set in Hawaii, for heaven's sake. It will either succeed or fail -- depending on the ratings. Yes, CBS hyped the show as all the networks hype their new shows. Arguably, the networks hyped new shows even more in the 70's and 80's than they do today. We no longer have the ridiculous annual themes: anyone remember "Looking good here, looking good there, looking good everyone...you and CBS are looking good!" as well as the even more ridiculous local versions (in Seattle, they had the news people jumping around with Channel 7 umbrellas!).

Man, you really want this show to fail dont you?

I can't speak for Gregg75 but I sure do. It's not that it is a cheap imitation of a 60's icon (because I really didn't like the original any better) but that this show is a run-of-the-mill, poorly written, loaded-with-SFX and pretty-boy-actors piece of junk. AFAIK, the only things going for it are some female eye-candy (which the original didn't have) and scenic vistas which are a bigger part of the show than in the original. I thought American's faux adoration of Hawaii was over but perhaps not.

I want shows like this to fail so that production companies will get the idea the viewing public wants something worth watching and not another rip-off duplicate. Why can't we see a remake of The Millionaire or Mission Impossible or The Defenders (the original, not that other C(BS) rip-off piece of junk)?

Aloha! I'm pushing the big Six-O and watching Five-O. Not that anybody at CBS cares if I watch because I'm so out of the much wanted demo of...everybody who is younger than me. Aloha!

I agree with landtuna. I never liked the original show. If you're doing a remake, find one that really deserves it.

And if you're going to promote a show "as if it's the second coming" which CBS did, you sure as hell had better deliver.

So because you don't like a show that millions of other people DO like--one that you admittedly never had any interest in anyway--it needs to fail?

You like wasting your own time, don't you? :D

Dead, largely from being declining attractions on the nation's fourth-rated network.

Perspective.

How is The Defenders a ripoff of the original? The only thing they have in common is the name...

I did mention The Defenders so I'll answer your question.

By 'ripoff' I obviously meant using the name of a very good program to promote a new show which bears no resemblance to the original.

Millions of people like American Idol too but that doesn't mean it is a worthwhile use of your time.

Whether I like 5-0 isn't the point. The point is it isn't well written or well acted and is just a pot-boiler cop show like virtually every other cop show in recent seasons.

I want TV to return to the days when dramas were written with more than eye-candy and SFX. If I wanted to watch a video game I would have bought one instead of turning on the TV.

Well shit, in that case ER was a ripoff of E.R. in a sense

Then don't turn on the TV; problem solved. Maybe not enough of the rest of the public doesn't think rehashing the ancient past is all that wonderful an entertainment option...in which case, the issue isn't with the programmers--who have always been seeing to meet the then-current tastes of the audience--but with the population as a whole who simply don't want what you do.
