Hawk equals Hok?

It just occured to me...

Is the Hawk moniker Wilks is using for WHOK supposed to represent the calls? Here in the "Clummus" area, most people would pronounce "Hawk" about the same as "Hok."

BTW, it seems to be taking them awhile to get a website up.

HOK likely does spell HAWK just like BZX spells BLITZ and XMG spells MAGIC and SNY spells SUNNY...
There are only so many letters to go around, Roo-dude.

That's true, Radioboy, but the difference with your examples is that the calls were adopted either together with, or after, the station adopted the identity. The HOK calls (which, as I'm sure you know, come from Hocking), have been around for ages.

Marko, I don't know how to answer your question because I don't understand what you're asking. If you're saying this is a less-than-exciting topic, I can't argue. It's been pretty quiet here lately. Oh...maybe you're involved with creation of the HOK website and didn't like my comment about the fact that it isn't up yet??

...and WNCI stands (Stood) for Nationwide Communications Inc. before Jacor got ahold of it, and later, as well as currently, CC.
Some others...
WCOL stands for "Columbus"
WBNS stands for Boots, News, and Shoes(The old Wolf family businesses)-these calls have been around since 1922.
and now for some old ones...
WXGT(The old 92X)-The "GT" part stood for Great Trails Broadcasting, who formerly owned 92.3(Now WCOL). That's also what the "GT" in WGTZ stands for(Z-93 in Dayton)-"Great Trails Z" basically.
WXST-The "ST" stood for "Star" on 80s oldies "Star 107.9".

When I saw that they were renaming it "Hawk" I had to laugh. When I was doing afternoons at K95 years ago, I proposed that same idea to Max Raines, who was doing mornings and was the PD. He thought if we called it "Hawk" that our listeners would think we were referring to "hocking a loogie." He's was probably right...

Other call letter meanings from the old days

WNRE Nelson R Embrey
WTVN The Voice Of News
WLOH Lancaster OH
WMNI Mnich (family)
I thought WBNS was for Wolfe Bros. News Station

I thought BNS stood for Best News, a reference to the Dispatch. Or was it Best News Station? But that Boots, News & Shoes bit sounds vaguely familar, too. I just call then Beans. And I hope you won't be offended, WRMZFM100, but I used to call WRMZ worms. I'm also kind oif surprised you didn't give the origins of the WRMZ calls, namely William R. Mnich, patriarch of the Mnich family that owns WMNI, WTDA and the station that is now on worms' old frequency, WBZX.

No offense, we called it "Worms" too. When RMZ was on the top floor of the then abandoned Southern Hotel, worms weren't the only things crawling around there. Working overnights was scary, scary stuff.

Speaking of hotels, interesting thing..you would think that WCOL were the original call letters for 1230 but it used to be WSEN. It was in the Seneca Hotel.

It's
Wolfe
Banks (as in Ohio National Bank, Ohio State Bank, BancOhio, The Ohio Company)
News and
Shoes
