According to this morning's AJC, the Atlanta Hawks have a contract with 790 the Zone to broadcast their games on-air. The deal which is for 2 years, also includes that the Hawks will be responsible for selling most of the advertising in-game and Steve Holman will be the play-by-play announcer. The analyst position wasn't announced as well as a third member to the broadcast team, a "sideline reporter" type of position who'll interview noteworthy people in the stands.

Aaccording to the story, whenever there is a conflict with Ga. Tech football or basketball, the Hawks will move to 102.5(Classic Soul).

Hawks were on 750 WSB, right? Is WSB dumping all sports after losing Braves? What of Georgia football?

Another Nail in the 680 Coffin

The Hawks are just about ready to explode on the NBA scene and 790 will be at the center of the storm! Insider tip, look for one of the Stews to be part of the braodcasts. David Dickey has reportedly already ordered moving boxes after hearing this news. I wonder if CNN Headline Radio News wants back on the air?

> Don't worry. The Dawgs will stay at WSB for many years to come. However, in 2 years the radio rights holder for UGa. will be ISP Sports and not Cox Radio. That shouldn't change the relationship between UGa. and WSB.
Still many rumors that the Falcons will be on WSB after this (2005) season.

Why they keep getting a .7

The Hawks are not the reason that 680 is an embarassment. It may have more to do with the fact that 680....

1) Keeps putting mediocre amateur hosts on the air, including Perry who was LITERALLY making sandwiches before 680 gave him a show.

2) Keeps hiring morning hosts like Rude, who has been fired from virtually every radio station in Atlanta, and is somebody that no other station wanted to hire. (not to mention the co-host, Dukes, who went to 680 because 790 kept turning him down)

3) Takes a former board operator and makes him program director because Dickey was too cheap to hire a legitimate program director.

4) Is run by a general manager, David Dickey, who had no experience managing a station but instead received 680 as an expensive toy from his rich daddy.

These might be some of the reasons why 680 keeps getting a .7 in every book.

Another piece in the puzzzle for the new look and sound 790. Clearly with the move of the Stews to afternoon, the addition of Chuck Smith and now taking on the Hawks, the Zone is trying to build it's audience by adding urban listeners.

Two questions..
Will it actually help improve ratings numbers that have not moved in years and will the advertisers who have made the Zone a huge success despite modest to low audience figures buy into the new sound.

Nice rumor but looks like pure BS. They do have the thrasher which have a better chance of making the playoffs this year than the Hawks and they supposedly signed Bleck and Koolade to new deals so I doubt the boxes are on the way. I prefer the Zone and hope to see them grow. The fan is lame but I dont see them turning the lights off in the next 18 months.

I definitely see them trying to cater to an urban audience now.
I like 790's "sound" but I can't hate on 680 the Fan. There is just somethin' about them that is comfortable.
Do you know what I'm saying?

Anyway, will the Hawks games be played during the day now?
I ask because how in the heck are we supposed to listen to the games after 7:30pm? The evening signals on 790 AND classic soul are really poor at night.

and this isn't a joke.
i'm serious.

Re: Why they keep getting a .7

Wow this nasty. But all true. You are either inside the Dickey station or used to be.

I suggest 680 needs to go White good ol boy to counter 790.

That's weird. I thought the Hawks were to going to be on 680 The Fan. Having said that, it appears the Hawks are going to need a lot of affiliates, especially outside of the Atlanta area. I'm surprised the Hawks don't have a lot of stations in south Georgia broadcasting the games. Then again, the Hawks have been so bad for so long that it's not worth spending the money on.

Re: Why they keep getting a .7

Some would say that is basically what they've been doing.

There is absolutely no market for the Hawks down here in South Georgia. Unless, ofcourse, the Hawks were to turn into the Lakers or the Spurs and reel off multiple championships and that ain't going to happen..I am an unemployed basketball announcer down here in South Georgia..and there is no worse place to be stuck in....people in South Georgia don't really care about basketball....and on radio it can be a tough sell. The Braves are an easy sell..the Falcons used to be tough but that is changing...But I doubt there are many radio stations in South Gerogia that can make a penny running the Hawks.

Very good point. That's basically the only audience 790 can have since their signal sucks outside the perimeter. Very smart move by WQXI. Hopefully they will still work with AM 550 WGUN I can definitely hear that at all times. <P ID="signature">______________

How about the Georgia Bulldog basketball radio network? Or even Georgia Tech for that matter? Are those teams harder to sell in south Georgia?

I think the Hawks realize that there are not many good AM signals to go around. My guess is, that regular season NBA radio is a ratings loser anyway. The games believe it or not may be an afterthought as the Hawks could be concentrating on the promotion of their product and the pushing of ticket sales that would likely take place throughout the day on the Zone.

Think of it as an all day commercial while the games run to whoever can tune them in (or even bother to try to) at night.

I would just listen on the internet if I wanted to listen to a game; I've done it with other after dark broadcasts on The Zone; In fact, even though I pick up 790 The Zone fine at my house on the radio, I prefer listening on the inrernet because I am usually sitting in fron of the computer anyway; Their internet feed sounds really good; a definite improvement over the old one.
