HD-3

I was reading on another board that several stations are starting to turn on HD-3.
I've got some mixed emotions on HD. I like the thought of variety and the available options.

But there are only so many listeners in a market though. If you currently have twenty stations, you slice up the pie twenty ways. Add in 40 to 60 new channels and that pie shrinks. Could any one station garner respectable ratings? Ten stations? I know in today's world, there are a lot of other options. i-Pods, XM, streaming... it just seems to me that radio is trying to cut its own throat.

The idea is as long as they are listening to some form of " terrestrial radio" it's a good thing. My thought is let's just get the HD2's running well and then see what happens. Like with anything new it takes a while to really get the true results. The feedback I've seen so far has been really good. I can tell you we don't have plans here to do hd3's just because of quality issues once you add the third stream. I don't see adding options to a dial that is still free a bad thing.

Hey Rigger..is it true that when the PPM gets going full steam that it will only record that someone is listening to 97.9, and not the different HD streams?

So then they COULD be listening to 97.9..BUT hearing the HD stream of "Relaxing Bollywood Favourites" on HD2, AND then the "Angry Out Of Work Roofer Country Rock Flipsides" channel on HD3?

Jeesh there's be little bandwidth left to have 98 Rock sound like more than a bad cassette if they did that huh?

"Angry Out Of Work Roofer Country Rock Flipsides" LOL ;D . Damn you gotta service mark that one!

As long as your are encoding each I can't understand why it would not count. You just wouldn't know which channel they were actually listening to. They should be doing a seperate encode for each but what do I know.

I understand that at first only the main channel, HD1, will be encoded for PPM. Later, each HD channel we be encoded seperatley.
