HD Alliance 2007's #1 advertiser

More food for thought.

The HD Digital Radio Alliance's $250 million ad campaign bought it 1,451,036 spots last year – more than any other radio advertiser. It's followed by Gieco with 1,397,673 units. Rounding out the top five were Verizon, Home Depot and McDonald's. According to Media Monitors, the top advertiser on Hispanic radio in 2007 was Verizon, followed by Univision TV, McDonald's, Sprint Nextel and Toyota.

Yes, but with Geico, I can save 15% on my car insurance and piss off several cave men. Can I do the same with HD???? ::)

At least with Geico, the message is clear.

Well HD pisses off a lot of house dwellers, don't know about cavemen and you know the funny thing is I don't ever remember hearing any ads for IBOC.

Perhaps most of the HD radio promos ran on HD radio?
Preaching to the choir?
If a spot runs on HD radio and no one is listening does it log as a listener on Arbitron PPM?

...with one hugely important difference: Geico paid cash US money for its spots. The HD Alliance spent $0. They were using distressed inventory (read: cash advertisers bumped their spots).

As for the HD Alliance's ROI (i.e., raising awareness of HD Radio and driving receiver sales), we're still waiting to see some firm numbers.

I've heard them, and if that's what passes for promotion of a new tech, they need to immediately fire whoever thought it up and start over. I've never heard worse copy in my life. The newest campaign for HD Radio builds up HD Radio by tearing down its foundation...the existing programming on radio's analog channels. How surprised (and pissed off) are listeners going to be when they fire up a new HD Radio and find the exact same programming on the HD1 channels that these promos tear to pieces? "I thought you said this programming was garbage, so why is it now on two channels instead of one?"

Radio used to be absolutely tops at promoting itself. These days it can't get out of its own way.

Rarely have you demonstrated your knowledge of the radio business more clearly than with this question. :)

I thought it was more of a rhetorical question like can you hear the sound of one hand clapping? Or if a log falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it still a sound?

Yeah, right, Tom. He COULD be the worst joke writer in the world...
except as written, it's not the least bit funny to anyone that understands the terms involved. It's about as funny as "If you're car won't start in the morning, does that mean you need to empty you ashtrays?" ? ? ?

How about this. Everyone in a smaller market know about a blind bonus. On HD2's they call it a deaf Bonus because there's no one listening to hear it.

Now THAT'S at least mildly amusing. :)

Don't forget your bartenders and waitstaff. You've been great...
