An amusing thing about HD clock radios which hasn't gotten much publicity:

Since an HD Radio is essentially a computer, the CPU has a cooling fan. Many HD clock radios have been returned because consumers find the noise or air movement (or both) objectionable in the quiet nighttime environment of a bedroom. Of course relocating the radio from the bedside stand is kind of self-defeating. Why buy a radio you have to place in an inconvenient location, like away from the bed, over on a dresser?

I guess most radio listeners want receivers which are quiet when they're turned off.

Can you tell us how many radios Bob? I never heard of this issue. Funny things is that I have the Receptor HD by my bedside on a wicker table and its never kept me awake or prevented me from falling asleep. Its been there since 2006. I guess the laws of physics have bypased my house.

My Sony has a fan in it. I thought that might be a problem sitting next to my ear, but so far I haven't really noticed it. I think it only kicks on when the radio is playing, so the audio effectively masks the fan noise. At least on this radio, it doesn't do much for HD’s advantage of having a high signal to noise ratio unless you are wearing headphones. Maybe this is one is a "Signal to Fan" ratio.

How many HD clock radios have been returned because of CPU fan noise? Well, checking the meticulous and regularly-released Alliance sales figures for every type of HD radios, which are publicly updated almost daily....wait, it's still coming up.....ahh, yes.

I have it right here: 1431 clock radios have come back with fan-noise complaints.

In other words, half of all HD Radio receiver sales for calendar 2008. In the world.

Experience has taught us that the "laws of physics" elude most HD Radio proponents.

RF, what do you mean it never kept you awake or prevented you from falling asleep? Have you tried moving the antenna?

Go to any retailer selling satRad and note how the elaborate displays are often silent and always ignored.

Funny how the ones I've seen are always operating, and people are always interested. Whether or not they buy it is another story, but the radios are always on. Can't say the same for HD, when I can actually find a retailer that still attempts to sell it.

A miracle happened the other day. I walked into my local Circuit city and they had two car HD radios: a Sony and a JVC. I asked the salesman about them, he instantly steered me toward the Satellite display mumbling something about HD not working in the store. I pressed him a little about his experience with HD and he said that it is possible to receive a few stations in the parking lot (which is on top of a big hill with a lot of far horizon around) although he hadn't seen many people with them and strongly urged me to go with satellite. He did say that HD was free but insinuated that most people (including me, his customer) would prefer to pay 12 bucks a month for Satellite than get an HD radio which hardly pulled any stations in for free. He cited the obvious example that you could drive across the country and listen to the same station all the way if you wanted, truckers liked it, with HD you'd drive a little ways and have to find another station, etc. he convinced me ;D although for now I'll stay with my analog car radio which sounds quite good actually.
