HD AMs Continue to loose listeners-New Philly ratings

Is HD radio AM's savior?
Not according to the latest Philly ratings. All HD AMs are down, again.

Quote from a recent e-mail from C. Crane's Customer Support Supervisor:
Thank you for taking the time to contact our company. Personally, I only recommend HD to folks who live in metro areas that get HD signals and are unable to get broadband internet. I am more of a fan of broadband internet over HD. If you live in a suburban or rural area then I would not recommend HD because like you pointed out the results are not that great. As the years go by and more stations convert to HD this will improve though. With an internet radio this becomes a moot point since you can listen to stations around the world with out signal loss.

"Again?" PPM has only been "currency" in Philadelphia for 3 months, and Arbitron has admitted to problems in keeping the panelists "active." The data from PPM that Arbitron is releasing is cume, not share. prior to May, there is no public data to compare with, anyway. Three months into a new system is hardly representative of what is going on... particularly since we have no data to compare with from any perido prior to each station converting to HD.

PPM data is issued monthly, so the three months issued so far equal the total survey period of one diary-method book. And take a look at the top 10 stations... 8 of the 10 lost cume, too. In general, the cume losses were well within the margin of error of the survey, and look to be issues involving Arbitron's compliance issues, not a programming or technical issue.

Add that to the fact that AM news / talk often has dips in the summer due to changed lifestyle patterns, and there is really nothing extraordinary there

The PPM ratings are not flawed", says Arbitron

Then why did they create a "fix up" project to correct the horribly low compliance in June and July?

And the fact is, all polls vary slightly, based on the calculable margin of error in any statistical sample. The changes in Philly between June and July are all deeply inside the range of the margin of error. And the fact is that for as many decades as we have had ratings, summer listening is always a bit lower than the rest of the year.

So your comments on "changes" in Philly are without base.
