HD Clock Radio

I like the rhythmic ticking sometimes. Wonder if anyone ever put this option in any of the newer "sounds of nature" clock radios.
My ex was crazy had issues and would go to sleep with an analogue TV on a vacant channel for the hiss. ::)
I persuaded her to use an FM radio between stations and reduce "my" power bill.

One of my crazy ex's had to leave a fan on all night even in winter, if it was off she couldn't fall asleep.

She could have fallen asleep to the sound of IBUZ

Bumping this. Is there seriously not an HD clock radio on the market?

I like waking up to WCBS-AM but something in the neighborhood has started wiping it out. I'd really like to keep the routine but I think I need to find an HD clock radio and use the WCBS-FM HD2 simulcast instead, because the AM signal is getting totaled now. Massive high-pitched squeal, I can't null it out, very frustrating.

Is there anything new on the market? I seem to recall Sony made one, now discontinued I think, but IIRC it has issues with the alarm section.

No wonder both AM and HD radio are dying. Bah.

Nope - HD was a failure in the marketplace with consumers.

If you want a high-tech radio that will access digital streams AND be a great clock radio, check out the Sangean WFR-1 or WFR-20. Both are excellent Internet radios that can access many of the automated streams that make up the HD -2 and -3 stations. I've been using a WFR-20 for three years and it's never, ever let me down.

Oh, and the sound quality is good as well. It easily fills the room without distorting.

Unless you want to park a Volvo in your bedroom, you're probably not going to find an HD Radio there.

Thanks but I've been pretty disappointed with Wi-Fi radios, at least judging by my Logitech Squeezebox units. To begin with they don't hang onto the Wi-Fi connection reliably enough to depend on for waking up to.

Also I don't know about Sangean but in Logitech's case they don't support iHeartRadio means a ton of stations are now unavailable. Then you've got all the other aggregator platforms that stations are moving onto with no guarantee that the hardware manufacturers will be supporting them as they evolve either.

Finally the stream usually lags behind the live broadcast, and the inserted replacement spots are generally horrendous, even worse than most of the on-air ads which I didn't believe was even possible.

I know HD Radio is basically a failure in the marketplace. But in my case it would solve a problem, so even if I'm one of the only ones who cares it would be nice to find a decent unit.

Believe me, I've had them both. The Logitech is a toy. The Sangean is a heavy, well-built receiver. Amazon will be happy to send you one. If you hate it, you've got 30 days.

We now return you to your regularly-scheduled HD bashing. ;)

Boston Acoustics HD Receptor desk-top radio has an alarm and it does get HD. Not sure they make them anymore though - might be able to get one on e-bay or somewhere else as overstock. I have one and it works well.

:)

Re: HD Clock Radio - DICE Had ONE!

Directed Electronics sold a 'clock radio' HD AM/FM radio with 2 alarms and 2 remote speakers. Stopped selling it within a year - too bad, because IF they asked any of us, they could have made it into a really good radio. BUT, the AUX input had a non-stop ticking bomb sound, and if you used the 'headphone jack' to try to make a recording of an HD station, you also got the 'ticking time bomb' noise in the audio output; so unless you ran it loud, it was not good. AM loop wire was too short, so you had self-interference. Radio ran hot; giant wall wart ran hot; HD lite blinked forever and never locked on most AM stations. Seemed to have a pseudo-CQUAM AM stereo though on a very strong signal, though reduced bandwidth audio. Selectivity was excellent, but that's all I can say good about it. Oh, and the other reason you could never really use it as an alarm clock - even on 'dim' the blue LED display would etch-out your retina's thru your eyelids. Like I said, a dozen of us could have given them feedback on how and what to fix, but they're gone already. Bye bye Directed Electronics HD radios...
