HD/Digital TV

God, I hate to have to ask these questions as I was one who "bitched" about TV topics on this board but I see no alternative. So, please bear with me.

I got caught up with all the hoopla about HD/Digital TV and all the great looking pictures that I saw a a local WallyMart.

Well, I succumbed to the tempation and bought a Sanyo 48" flatscreen with al the bells and whistles. Time Warner came out with a deal that if you have HBO and do not subscribe to the digital service, they would give you a converter for a year.. I fell for that and hooked it up.

NOW! I have all this stuff and my TV doesn't look anything like what I saw at WallyMart!! Can someone explain what the deal is??

Thanks BIGAPE

Before any other questions are asked this one has to be first. Is the converter box they gave you a HIgh Definition box. (HD) If it is then we move on. If it is not a HD box then bitch at them for improper consultation and get one.

Yep, State of the Art Scientific Atlanta 4240 HDC

how are you connecting the TV to the HD box....if you are not using Component or HDMI then you will NOT get the full HD signal..go do yourself a favor and run down to your local intrex computers store, they have the cheapest prices on HDMI cables in the area hands down.....all the major chain stores Radio Shaft...Wally World...Bust Buy.etc mark up the price of those cables by about 4-500%..case and point..I bought a 50ft HDMI cable off ebay for less than $30...wal mart charges $36 for a 3 ft cable.

...time warner cables HD channels are in the 500 tier channels..and I believe thats true for the triad and triangle.

The local HD channels are in the early 500's. If you get a picture on 510, 520, 530 or 540 (those are the HD channels for WGHP, WFMY, WXLV and WXII) then you have a HD cable box. If those channels are blank, then you don't have a HD cable box. If the cable box doesn't have HDMI or component cable connections to your TV, you are not seeing HD. Also, make sure your TV is in HD mode (720 or 1080) and be sure the cable box is also in HD mode. My friend went round and round with Time Warner about the cable box being in SD mode (480) and not HD mode and after them coming out 5 times, Time Warner FINALLY figured it out. They aren't always the brightest bulb in the pack.

come to think of it, I actually had the same problem when I upgraded to a HDTV..time warner couldn't figure out why it wasn't coming down in HD For me...sent a technician out as well and he was dumbfounded...some quick googling and some fixing on my part and I ended up getting full HD thru it.

OK, Thanks to all!  I don't have that cable only the coax that TW supplied so indeed that must be the problem.  I do receive all those HD Stations but it looks the same as the others.

What's a Intrex computer store??  BIGAPE

Yup, that is your problem. If ya don't mind waiting for online orders Wall Mart has a 6 ft HDMI cable for $ 10.88 and a 13 ft one for $14.88. Get the shorter one if you don't need 13 feet. Intrex stores are in G'Boro, Winston, Raleigh. Go to http://www.intrex.com/

It seems like TW would tell you that you needed the cable! In fact, I'm surprised they don't try to sell you one themselves.
I would not even have gone this way, but I got an e-mail from TW stating they were moving HBO to the upper digital tier in September and if you didn't have digital, you would lose HBO..I started to cancel, but the deal is if you have HBO now, they give you th box and conversion for one year (Give hell, I'm already paying 81 bucks)
So, after the year, we'll see! BIGAPE

getting a tech at time warner to give you some cables should not be a problem if you want to go that route..apparently they have literally tons of it laying around from when people return their cable boxes they return all the cables with it...

What kind of cables are these? Do they have the same connector on both ends..Just need to know what to look for at the store

Got the cable, Installed it and voila everythings great! Thanks everyone
