OK guys.. I've found an HD station 120 miles away from me that I REALLY want to hear. I have access to tall towers to get the signal if necessary, but I'm wondering what radio would be the best DX machine for HD at this point. How good does the HD2 work, anyway? Early reports was it worked poorer than the main. Is this true?

If it streams online, that may be your best option. The Internet stream may sound better than the HD2 signal.<P ID="signature">______________

If the station has an HD2, the signal has gotta be coming in consistently strong, or else the HD2 will either not come in at all, or break up ...

The D2 signal does not go as far as the analog. In a car I was getting the Chicago HD2s about 60 miles away. Remember Chicago FMs do not have 100kW power. This station in particular runs 4.1kW at 480m which means the HD signal is 41 WATTS. If the station you are trying for is 100kW then the HD signal would be 1kW.

The HD2 sigal has the same coverage as the HD1 signal

As far as the best DX machine, I am not sure if that has been decided yet. I know my Kenwood works pretty decent. I hope that helps a little.

Yes... The HD1, HD2, and HD3 channels are all multiplexed into a single data stream over IBOC. The only difference between HD1 and the HD2 or HD3 channels is that in the fringe IBOC reception area for a station, the receiver can blend back from HD1 to analog. For HD2 and HD3 the audio just drops out, like a satellite radio receiver when going under a long tunnel.
