HD (I know, I know) question

I entertained the idea of getting HD radio for a while until I realized that I could access thousands of stations and formats online from all over the world and just route it to my Stereo system. It kind of made it seem like a silly idea to shell out $100 just so I could pick up 5 more local stations.

I'm in East Providence; listening on my radio here, WHJY is in HD but WWBB is not.

FWIW, I have several HD Radios less because they get HD and more because they're just very good tuners. It's not true of all HD receivers, but a lot of them are superior tuners for analog, too.

Agreed, I have a Sangean HDT-1X and a Sony XDRF1HD tuner... neither for HD content. Both are very well built and are awesome DX receivers.

I'll have to try 94.1-2 again to be sure. No problems with 93.3-2. Also, You Do It has a bunch of Coby HD radios in their dead technology section (along with an analog TV for $4.99) for $29.99.

94.1 HDs are solid within 20 miles of the tower. It starts to drop out on Rt 117 near Greene in Coventry and also toward the Rt 2 end of South Road in Exeter for a couple examples. WHJJ 920 HD has been off for a while.

A radio without HD is virtually worthless to me. No Alternative here on Sunday except for 94.1 HD 2 and no Alternative at all in NYC except 92.3 HD2 and 104.3 HD2. What good is owning a radio that can't receive an existing local signal -- especially the one you need?

I'm still having trouble getting 94.1's HD. 93.3 comes in fine. From Boston, 89.7 & 102.5 come in the best. I used to get signals from 103.3 & 104.1 but no longer. 100.7, 98.5 both come in spotty but 94.5 is better than those and not as strong as 89.7 or 102.5.

HD Radio will continue to be a failure until the following occurs:

1.) Congress mandates all new digital AM/FM receivers include HD chipset capabilities.
2.) The licensing fee to iBiquity for receiving equipment is eliminated.

I would also mandate that they end AM broadcasting in HD as well. It's in the public's best interest to still have the AM band as analog-only, in the event of emergencies and disasters.

Otherwise, Internet streaming is more likely to succeed than HD radio. We already know there are many many more smartphones out there with 3G/4G service than there are receivers capable of HD reception. Just my two cents...

I can't say I disagree! I got the radio for free so I use it but the sidechannels on F.M. really aren't anything to write home about.
