HD IN Alaska: KOTZ 720

Sometime recently, KOTZ went HD, hybrid mode.. analog and digital. It won't affect 99.9 percent of you reading this message, but I thought I'd share.

I ordered a Sangean HDR14 which is HD Capable and will work with my inductively coupled FSL antenna and I fully expect the 10kw signal to lock in HD from 250 miles away regularly, based on what I get from the analog.

Very cool! (literally)
Do you have a radio that can decode it? If so, how does it sound?

No i dont have a portable, battery operated HD capable radio which is why I ordered the Sangean HDR14. I have plenty of portables but none that do HD.

The HDR14 is a pretty good radio too, for such a small size.. from what i've seen of it.

I'm actually farther from KOTZ than I thought, @Kelly A .. im 350 miles.. but I get the analog well enough on a regular basis, I really do expect to get the HD to lock at some point, unknown as to how well or how often. I should at least see the carrier flash and try to lock almost any time I tune in.

That's actually an advantage AM hybrid has over FM-HD; you can hear the HD carrier almost as far as analog, including skywave. Back when WCBS NYC was doing hybrid mode, I could hear them in HD while commuting between my home 60+ miles South of D.C. along I-95.

I will most certainly report back with results, pictures and audio
