I see that the number of HD radio stations continues to grow in the Hartford area. So, I was ready to make the plunge and went to my nearest Radio Shack. I was surprised to learn that they only had a few units and none of them were portable. The sales clerk said right now the only units available run on AC power only. He had no idea why.

So, I backed off buying one. Does anyone know why the only HD radios are for cars or AC only. Is it technology problem?

The chip sets used in HD radio consume too much power to be used in portable devices. If/when they refine the chips they may be able to get the consumption down to something that will last more than a few minutes on batteries.
