HD IN NEW ENGLAND

So,

Who will be the first station in the region (Boston, Hartford, Providence) to go full HD with their newscast including studio, field, ENG and chopper?

Any thoughts, rumors, rumblings or mumblings out there that you have heard?

Somehow I'm guessing WCVB, since I think they were the very first digital television station in New England. And I think it has the highest news ratings in Boston, and they always tend to be very up to date with their news. I believe they were also the very first station to have a closed-captioned newscast.

I thought Ed Ansin's WHDH 7 was already full time HD? I read that was why they reodeled their newsroom, so that it fits the SDTV dimensions?

Garrett,

I could be wrong, but I have not heard that any of the Boston stations newscasts have gone to full HD (studio and field including ENG, chopper as well as graphics) to date. In many cases, stations "upconvert" their SD signal and simulcast it in a stretched 16:9 format. Yes, it's widescreen but far from being true HD. Could this also be the case currently with WHDH?

How about Hartford or Providence? I heard that WFSB in Hartford has a new building on the way for late next year. Will it be full HD? As far as P-Town goes, I would think WPRI would be most likely to go full HD first.

Anyone know?

WFSB-TV/DT's building will be to the south in Rocky Hill near I-91. With the FCC dealine of 2009 looming for analog, I can't see why they wouldn't be HD ready.

Are any Boston stations broadcasting in HD as far as local news sitcoms etc?
Here in Roanoke VA. All networks stations have started local news and sitcoms in HD with the exception of ION, PBS, And independents with full power.

The FCC deadline is for digital transmission, not necessarily HD digital. While I would concur it would be a bad idea to build a new facility without high-definition in mind, even in 2009 it won't be a FCC requirement.

Regarding FRM-Yankey's post.. I would be VERY surprised if all the Roanoke, VA stations are running local news and sitcoms in HD. Indeed, I'm not aware of any syndicated sitcoms available in HD. I would certainly believe they're upconverting standard-definition news & entertainment to HD, and airing HD material from their networks.

Two and 1/2 Men is being syndicated in HD over pathfire (its a start), and of course Jeporady and Wheel. Furthermore, alot of other stations (as in lower DMA rank than Boston) are doing atleast HD in studio etc, but Boston? Only one station!

Even though WFSB has a new facility, they will not be doing HD newscasts at this time. Al Terzi last spring told a gathering of the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce in North Haven that it will be a few years before newscasts are in HD. WVIT has plans for a new building at its present location but I don't know when they will be breaking ground for it. Tribune's ownership situation for WTIC-TV and WTXX is up in the air, and I haven't heard any announcements about HD for WTNH and WCTX.
