HD in Pokip

I'll be in Wap/Pokip/Beacon this weekend and was wondering what I can expect to get on my HD radio. I see PDH is up and running, but will I get anything from the city? What about stations from Albany?

In addition to WPDH that is up and running in HD, there are other stations that are not running in HD as of yet:

1. 96.1 Kiss-FM
2. 92.1/99.3/98.5 Lite-FM
3. Cool 92.9
4. Cruisin' 93.5
5. 1450 WKIP
6. News-Talk 920 WGHQ
7. Star 93.3
8. WRWD 107.3
9. 1230 WHUC
10. 1260 WBNR
11. 100.7 WHUD
12. 100.1 WDST
13. 94.3/97.3 The Wolf
14. Mix 97.7
15. 92.7/96.9 WRRV
16. K-104

Those are the 16 stations that are not running in HD yet. I hope there could be more CC Hudson Valley, Cumulus and Pamal stations that are suppose to be running in HD. I hope it will happen soon.

Do you think anyone cares about HD Radio? Go into Best Buy or Circuit City or even Radio Shack and ask for an HD Radio and they'll have no idea what you're talking about. HD Radio is not coming to the HV any time soon.

Look at the stations in New York City that is still running on HD:

1. WAXQ (Q-104) - Deep Tracks
2. WKTU - Country
3. WNEW - Simulcast of 1010 WINS
4. WQHT (Hot 97) - Old School Rap
5. WRKS (Kiss-FM) - Gospel
6. WHTZ (Z-100) - Deeper Top 40/CHR
7. WLTW (Lite-FM) - Classic AC
8. WWPR (Power 105) - Spanish Rap as "Power Espanol"
9. WCBS-FM - Oldies
10. WQCD - New York Chill

Those are the FM stations in New York City are stil running in HD, and in the Hudson Valley, it's not happening except only one station that is still running in HD is WPDH, that was it.

Make sure you use your 7-foot dipole antenna ! :D

Back from my trip to the Hudson Valley. I was impressed with WPDH's use of the PAD data as they not only scrolled artist and title, but also some messages like "Let us know you are listening in hi-def" and a few others. I've dialed in other Cumulus HD stations, and they don't even bother to hook up the PAD data so I was glad to see PDH making good use of it.

As for pulling in NYC HD on Route 9, well, that was sporatic. I did manage to lock in WHTZ, WPLJ, WKTU, WAXQ, WQCD, WNEW and WABC-AM. They popped in and out, so I never was able to keep them for any length of time, but at least I know it's possible. I'm guessing if you go to the trouble to put up an antenna, you could probably reel in most of New York City's HD in the Hudson Valley.

Finally, it's funny that someone on the board mentioned going into Radio Shack. I did just that today in the Poughkeepsie Galleria and sure enough, they have HD Radios in stock. The sales guys were a bit clueless as to what they were, but all 3 of them showed interest when I took some time to explain HD to them.

That's my point - if the folks at radio shack don't know about HD Radio, it isn't going to be a factor anytime soon. What's the point of broadcasting in HD if no one can listen in HD.

One of the reasons HD radio is not successful is that HD radios are very overpriced. The technology isn't there yet, either, because most HD stations only have a digital range of 20 miles, and it's probably less so around here with all of the hills. And when your programming sucks in the first place (WPDH anyone?), who cares whether its in HD or not? People will only continue to listen to terrestrial radio if they gain something from it, not because of some stupid new technology.

exactly! why bother making crappy programming sound better. audio quality is not the problem with radio, it's boring, safe programming that doesn't engage the listener. the money spent on converting to digital would be much better spent on developing new talent and researching and marketing innovative programing products.

I disagree. Not all radio is bad and HD will offer more choices to radio listeners. It'll just be a matter of time before other HV stations jump on board. At the moment, there really isn't the need because there are very few receivers available. HD radio will reach critcal mass is about 5 to 8 years, so the 1000+ stations that are now offering HD are just doing it to be competitive and claim the new technology.

Take a look at the HD Board - HD Radio will fail:

"If you build it, will they come ?"
