HD Jocks?

I've been offered a gig as an HD jock. I dont have HD, havent heard any HD stations. Do HD stations have jocks? And, in your learned opinions, is there any future/need for jocks on HD?

Is this going to be on an HD primary or secondary?

At least so far, HD-1 channels have jocks only if their analog counterparts have jocks (the analog and HD-1 are simulcast), and I have yet to hear of an HD-2 or -3 having jocks, since none of them have yet made so much as a penny for their owners.

Time to listen to WFUV's HD 2 channel. They have air personalities during some of their HD 2 shows. Also, WBBM FM's Oldies channel had some live air staff for awhile. You just have to know where to tune to hear these shows as they start appearing over some stations. If you are offreed a paying job to do air work, even if it means having your music played over a PA system in the lobby, why would you turn down the job if the money is right?

The HD 1 primary channel is requred by the rules to be a simulcast digital version of the analog program format. HD 2's can be anything. Few HD 3's are going to be found as the reduction in bitrate for all channels will likely be too severe for anything but talk or a data stream.

It sounds to me like an opportunity that is very similar to the one offered to the people who ran underground FM stations in the late 60s and early 70s. They went from obscure to mainstream in just a few years. History has been known to repeat itself.

And just think... Many of those HD channels stream on the INTERNET! You know that's where all the action is! Just ask vsa. He'll tell ya. Incessantly. It's gonna kill radio ya know.

It's good that beef is making this move now!

It's all about programming, of course. All about YOUR ability to build an audience (and the station's ability to properly promote). Imagine being the first voice on the new FM station in town in the late 40s, when very few people had FM radios.

There ARE a couple of HD2s with live human beings around (though some by network) in my area. If your station is serious enough to hire real people for the HD2, then hopefully they're serious enough to promote it, including on the main channel. If I were you, I'd take the challenge. But then I believe that AM radio is still viable for more than just right-wing talk and preachers. People listen to PEOPLE!

It won't be easy, but if the station is realistic about what to expect, and you're patient, and persistent, then GO FOR IT! Realize, however, that we're talking about VERY "delayed gratification". It may be YEARS before your audience is substantial, even under the best circumstances. This is FM when everyone had only AM. This is TV when there were TVs only in the stores, and the stations were only on 6 hours a day. It's virgin territory!

Detroit has a live HD2 - very good, called RIFF2 (WRIF-HD2).

It should be fun like FM radio was back in 1972-73 when you could do pretty much whatever you wanted to!
Play a whole album side, etc...

WBOS HD-2 in Boston (Radio You Boston) is staffed 12 hours a day (10am-10pm....then programming is repeated 10pm-10am). Standard jock shifts mid-days and afternoon drive with specialty shows filling in the schedule.
