HD Newscasts part Deux

Why do the local (DFW) newcasts that are "PRESENTED IN HD" repeat them several hours later in standard 4X3 on their HD channels?

You mean they repeat their newscasts on a DIGITAL channel such as 8.2?

A 6 MHz TV channel doesn't have room for two HDTV signals. So if 8.1 is in HD, 8.2 can't be, at least under the most common compression schemes.

There is an exception: KXII in Sherman runs CBS HD on 12.1, MyNetwork SD on 12.2 and Fox HD on 12.3. But they're doing something different that's experimental. I read about it a while back, but I don't recall the details. And I don't know how well it works.

Is it possible they have the capability to go live, but have no 16X9/HD recording capability?

This is entirely possible. However, I know that channel 11 runs Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy on tape in HD.
Channel 8 also runs some local spots in HD. One would think if they can do that, they can run their news repeats in HD.

Tape? That's so last century. Now most likely recorded and played back on HD servers, which is what the big boys have been using for a few years now. Tape, if still available, gets used as a backup.

It's a word I've used to describe recorded television programming for the last 3 decades. Sorry. They play back Wheel and Jeopardy which are recorded in HD.

it's all gonna be HD soon enough... so who cares? :-*

Not necessarily. Just because stations have to go digital on 2/19/2009, that doesn't mean they have to go HD. The two are completely different things. The Japanese were actually broadcasting analog HD 20 years ago, so just 'cuz it's HD doesn't mean it has to be digital, and vice-versa.

That also doesn't require stations to go 16:9. A lot of stations are spending so much money upgrading their transmission facilities to go digital that they have no money to invest in 16:9, let alone HD.

And there are so many different flavors of HD (1080i, 720p, 480p) and so many different compression schemes that it's going to take 20 years or more for all of that to sort itself out. Once it does, you may see everybody go HD.

One plus, though: for news stations looking to break into HD, the field cameras are a lot more affordable (you can get a Sony HVR-Z1U HDV camera [1440x1080 resolution] for under $5k, and an XDCAM EX camera that shoots on PC Express cards goes for a little over $6k - but the media for that camera is around $800 a pop, so don't look for it on breaking news shoots anytime soon......)
