XEX has had a solid signal into Texas for decades, and is still pretty much interference-free, assuming you are away from DFW and KKDA. XEX used to cover a wide swath of the US before the daytimers on 730 got nighttime authorization in the late 80's.

David, since you seem to have more knowledge about Mexican Radio, what type of "HD" radio is XEW 900 broadcasting on? They keep promoting "Alta Definicion" but I have yet to catch it. Are they using something else like DAB or are they testing with IBOC like some Mexican stations.

Jeff, first off, KTRH has no HD. It is simulcasted on KLOL HD2, but the 740 Khz frequency has no HD stream.

I think I may know what you are talking about. Let's see if I can explain.

HD radio works by the main station sending off an Analog signal (which in this case let just assume KTRH does have HD) and a Digital signal. Now the analog signal would travel through 740 Khz, but what about the Digital? The digital signal travels on both sides of 740 (which would be 745 Khz and 735 Khz). The digital signal makes a loud hash that eventually will splatter to 730, 720, 750, and 760 AM. I think what you read was that XEX 730 would be splattered with Digital Hash from the sidebands of KTRH making it almost impossible to hear XEX 730 in Houston.

But not to worry, KTRH has no IBOC on, so we can all get our Mexican Sports fill. ;D

Actually in HD AM, the HD sidebands are UNDER the analog sidebands in some cases!! IF KTRH was running IBOC, its audio on analog would sound like talking through a tin can with string....but it doesnt..it is full and rich thus you KNOW its not running HD :)
For a technical description of HD AM here is a link to a site that has the AM mask shown very nice:

With AM radio's signal problems, penetrating buildings/offices, would HD help the signal strength?

If the carrier cannot penetrate, you cant receive......No, it wont help in that sense unless the digital signal is strong enough to be decoded....then you get clean clear (well I AM talking IBOC AM here...so lets not get overboard!) audio with no buzz or noise.....but if the signal is not above the threshold, forget it...
