HD Promos in Dallas

As stations get their HD Promos on the air, how many are mistakenly identifying HD Radio as "High Definition"?

The Ticket is really bad about making this mistake. How many others are screwing this up?

Does it really bother you that badly?

If so, you really need some bigger problems in your life!

Personally, I think you should picket the station. [EDIT]

What does it matter? A few years and HD is gone anyway. Another AM stereo.

It's misleading, but they do it on purpose. The goal is to get the public to feel they "gotta switch because it's so much better," just like they are with TVs. Unfortunatley, they are midleading because it's "hybrid digital" not "hi-def." There's nothing hi-def about HD radio.

Still, I can't wait to get an HD tuner, but I can't believe how expensive they still are. The price needs to come WAY down (like 80% off) for these things to actually sell.

That's my point. Radio stations hurt their credibility with listeners by overselling the quality of this technology. It's especially risky for AM stations, because the signal strength of HD on AM is horrible. How many of you who own HD Radios can pull in all of the AM HD's in town--without irritating dropouts (the box should say, "60-foot antenna not included."). And when you get an AM station consistently, does it sound Hi-Def to you? Or are there audio artifacts and weird "internet streaming" sounds whishing around in it? And then this "great new technology" is...errr... turned off at night. And don't hold your breath for that to change. It won't.

Wanna hear a really funny thing about "HD" on AM? It is the stations own worst enemy. Due to the noisy sidebands created on the 1st adjacent channel either side of the main signal, when you put the typical car radio in "seek" or "scan" mode, it almost always skips right over the main carrier, jumping to the "HD" hash instead. I originally though maybe this was limited to just the cheap radios in rental cars (where I first noticed it while with a visitor from another market), but now I have discovered it happens on every radio I've tried. It is most noticible on the 1310 signal (not a great loss there, considering the programming of THAT particular station...Jeff, you're SO brilliant!), and on KRLD, where it absolutely does not matter (Gavin's "work in progress" as he calls it.) But I think it's kind of funny that "HD" has the power to actually cause less people to listen to the station. I guess when I was filling out my Arbitron diary a couple of months ago, I should have listed "KTCK - 1320 AM".

Look, I don't purport to have the crystal ball to know what the future holds for HD Radio.....

That said, I did need to upgrade my '96 vechicle to play CDs. So, I bought the JVD-KD-HDR1 on sale from the mail order company Crutchfield. I also got to particiapre in a $25 rebate. I had purchased from Crutchfield before, so I did not mind at all ordering from them. When the unit arrived, I took it to Fry's and let them do the installation, with the kit that I also ordered from Crutchfield.

I don't have any problem picking up any HD Radio signals. Being in the middle of the Metroplex helps. I will say that the difference from AM to HD-AM is remarkable, much more so than the difference from FM to HD-FM. The AM station that I'm talking about is Legends 770 KAAM, which plays music standards from the last 60 years.

The big difference on FM is the HD-2 channels. 107.5-2 lets me hear "The Oasis" Jazz.
KLUV 98.7-2 lets me hear all Beatles, all of the time.
I am hopeful that WRR 101.1 will come up with something interesting on an HD 2 channel.
Also, I am hoping that KERA 90.1 will add value to their station with their HD 2 channel.

Clear Channel's and Cumulus's HD-2 channels, KZPS, The Edge, The Mix, & The Bone, have all dissapointed me, as I was hoping for deeper album cuts in the Rock format, which DFW used to have back inthe 70's. So, it's Business as ususal, over there . . . . :(

I have also purchased the Accurian Tabletop Home HD Radio from Radio Shack. The HD FM sounds great, especially when using headphones. I am using the FM "T" antenna in the corner of the room, and the AM Lopp Antenna. Reception is good for all stations. I also purchased this radio on sale, and with a $25 Rebate.

I was glad to hear Crutchfield with the HD promos, as this is an established company with excellent customer care.

So, I rebut the arguement that reception is not good with HD Radio in this market. It is good, in my case, so I have no complaints. Is reception great for all? I don't know. But, I do know that it's great, for me, and that I have no complaints about it...Or the price....that I paid. :)

How many AM's besides 770 do you pick up with no trouble? And have you listened to the others for 15 minutes or longer without the need for re-buffering?
