HD radio-All promises, no satisfaction

Since both AM and FM HD radio delivers virtually none of what was promised to listeners, and the public, it's time to set a universal HD "buzz off" date. Today would be nice.

HD radio-All promises, no satisfaction.

1-Clearer, more reliable reception.
A-Rarely.

2-Better fidelity.
A-About the same as a good, well engineered FM station without HD.

3-Better reception.
A-About half the distance of analog, and not at all indoors at many locations, even within plain sight of the broadcasting towers, and with cumbersome, unsightly, extra antennas.

4-Compatible with existing analog broadcasting.
A-No way. Not In Band, or On Channel at all. Creates buzzing, hissing interference all over the radio dial.

5-Get hundreds of "stations between the stations".
A-HD radio jams the stations between the stations.

6-Immune to multipath.
A-Mutes, and vanishes, or reverts to analog (HD1 only) when multipath is encountered.

7-Free.
A-Only if you replace your radios with expensive, problematic, new HD radios, and install external (often outdoor) antennas.

8-More entertainment.
A-Hours of fun playing with antennas, waiting for rebuffering, and fiddling while stations cut in and out.

HD radio= Broadcaster's defective, destructive, expensive, technical solution to repair something that isn't broken.

All people have asked for is better programming, not a whole new set of reception problems, and expenses.

I do agree. However--

Even if (rather "when") Ibiquity IBAC flops as an audio broadcast tech, it probably won't be a total tech loss. From a purely technological standpoint it could still have its niche serving probably the same functions SCA is today--paging, point to point data transmissions (teletype?), remotes, etc. Heck, STL's could be built from it--just lower the bandwidth a little and it could be well more than adequate for many AM STLs.

(What was that old saying--"There is a time and place for everything"??)

Personally I think IBAC as a technology, is a good solid platform with a bit of potential, particularly on FM. AM on the other hand, is a technological and engineering nightmare regardless. (Sooner or later the laws of physics will come into play in these designs, possibly [most likely] not to the benefit of the tech.....)

Currently though, it is trying to be something it isn't (a consumer digital audio broadcast system) and unfortunately, Ibiquity just doesn't seem to realise that.

Just my $2.00 worth.

And I am sorry to disagree 700WLW (if you read this) but Wireless Internet tech won't be practical for ALL apps!

No problem... I'm probably not the only one, you would be disagreeing on Wireless Internet - cell phones already have it, and it looks like in-dash, will eventually go that way, because the advantages are just too great.

I have reported this thread since it has NOTHING to do with HD Radio

Good luck... They only delete PRO HD threads. The anti-HD ones can be totally irrelevant.

In fact, this post was a completely off-topic addition to another thread. Instead of simply deleting it or shuffling it off to the "Take It Outside" board as they would have done with any pro-HD post, they moved it to its very own thread.

Yeah I take it that even the mods are anti-HD's. Oh well they say there is no side what so ever YEAH RIGHT!!! I know of other places of better HD topics than this place. So long, I may come back if things improve, but they probably wont.

Actually, DRE has been exploring this for the FMeXtra product for quite some time. :)

NO satisfaction? I'm satisfied. I get enormous satisfaction every time I listen to classical music on WDAV at (very nearly) CD QUALITY!

You remind me of a guy I ran into at an audio store in the early days of cd. He was comparing a Yamaha CD player with a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable, telling everyone that "you've got to listen to this comparison. Nobody ever chooses the cd over the LP12!"

Well I listened, and I THOUGHT THE CD SOUNDED BETTER! I told him so. So did most everyone else in the room. On the way out I asked the dude..."are you going to tell the next group that nobody has ever chosen the cd over the LP12"?

My point? Are you going to continue to say HD provides "no satisfaction" among a group of PLENTY of satisfied HD listeners? Maybe it doesn't provide YOU with any satisfaction. That's fair. But if you have an amazing sexual experience tonight, and your partner...er, doesn't...well she can't very well claim that NOBODY got any satisfaction, can she? ;)

The F'ing radios have just gone on sale. Radio Shack reports that sales of the Accurian exceeded all expectations over the holidays. Many stores sold out (I know...YOURS didn't. Yadda, yadda, yadda!)

2007 is the year that MILLIONS of HD radios will go where people listen to radio the most...IN CARS. We're at the beginning. Months from now you'll seem pretty damn silly making claims of this type!

I remember reading in 1998 that nobody was interested in broadband. MOST PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS THEN, or how it could benefit them. Nobody claims that NOW!

RS only supplied a few HD radios, and refused to report the number sold, just as the HD Radio Cartel has done - one RS store had six, and it took six days to sell them. Prove that millions of HD radios are going into cars !

"Are you waiting in line for your HD radio?"

I can't PROVE something that hasn't happened (hd radios going in cars). I CAN report that major car makers SAY HD radios are going in them in the 2008 model year...second half of 2007.

Will it happend? Yes, I believe it will. Can I PROVE that it will happen? About as well as you can PROVE that the sun will rise tomorrow. But if I had to wager my life on which was likely to have a larger installed base by the end of the year in cars...HD radio, or internet access...that would be a pretty easy choice. And having made my choice, I'd rest easy, with no worries about my future!

HD radio is only being offered as an option (not standard) in cars. GM has been offering it for years with virtually no buyers.
Millions of HD radios in cars in 2007 is your totally "damn silly" fantasy.

This verifies reports posted here that the public has virtually no interest in owning an HD radio, even though most are aware of HD radio.

HD opponents are proven truthful and accurate again, as usual.
