HD Radio - an accepted reality ?

"HD Radio--An Accepted Reality"

"For the first time at NAB, most broadcasters seemed comfortable that consumers actually had some choice in digital radios, and that they were finding them readily accessible. With most of the large radio groups leading the way, what had once seemed speculative investment in station conversions is now beginning to look the norm... But by the time the forklifts took back the show floor, NAB2007 seemed best defined by a mood of acceptance that HD Radio is really here, and that it's time to get on with redefining radio in the 21st century--and perhaps that's not a bad place to be."

What - HD radios have been available for a year at Radio Shack, Circuit City, Amazon, Sharper Image, Wal-Mart, Crutchfield, Radiosophy, Sangean, Tweeter, and now Best Buy ! Do you think anyone at the HD Radio Alliance knows that optimistically, only 150,000 HD radios have been sold and that the consumer go-to site for HD Radio has been in a decline for the past year and has now hit bottom:

As the article states, do any of you non-HD Radio Alliance broadcasters feel comfortable with this, or are you just resigned that this farce isn't going away any time soon ? Just look at the headline, "HD Radio - an accepted reality ?" - this sounds like, "there is no choice, but to accept this nightmare" ! I don't know, how broadcasters can stand this garbage !

"Ibiquity Launches Next HD Radio Rebate Program"

"Columbia, MD - Apr 25, 2007 - A new HD Radio Rebate Program in celebration of moms, dads and grads was announced that effectively reduces HD Radio receiver prices by $40. The program applies to most HD Radio receivers -- from tabletops to car connect adapters -- and runs from April 29 through July 3, 2007. The rebate certificate is available at www.hdradio.com/rebate beginning April 29. National retailers of HD Radio products include Amazon.com, Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco.com, Crutchfield, Radio Shack, The Sharper Image, Tweeter and Wal-mart. There are also hundreds of other regional and specialty retailers who carry HD Radio products."

This article is posted just below the previous one - how ironic ! Yea, if HD radios were selling, then rebates would be unnecessary ! Come on dads, moms, and grads, let's celebrate ! And, for all you non-believers - there's yet another link to hdradio.com ! :D

I've seen rebates on Toyotas (the best selling cars in America), computers (nobody buys them!), microwave overns (Bridge Ratings shows surprisingly little interest in THEM), mp3 players (they'll never catch on!) lawn tractors (who would ever buy one of those in the spring, when the grass is growing? Better have a rebate) etc...and that's just THIS WEEK!

Rebates are offered all the time, for all sorts of reasons, and on some phenomenally successful products. GET A FACT STRAIGHT JUST ONCE IN A WHILE, PLEASE! Better yet, GET A LIFE!

The more I think about the rebate comment...that only unsuccessful products require rebates...the angrier I get. Geez dude, have you thumbed through a Best Buy or Staples catalog lately? It's hard to buy ANYTHING in the technology or consumer electronics realm these days without having to deal with those damn rebates. I HATE IT! I wish they'd just tell me what the freakin' price is. The reason companies do it, of course, is that they can advertise the benefits of a lower price, but many (most perhaps) don't remember to send off the rebate forms, so they don't actually have to OFFER the lower price. It sucks, and I think it's time we consumers called 'em on it!

Sounds like you are the one who needs to, "GET A LIFE" ! :D Looks like almost all of the HD radios are being put on-rebate, because they are not selling - the brand-new Radiosophy is being put on-rebate, in an attempt to generate consumer interest:

$99 HD Radio announced by Radiosophy at NAB

The only reason products have to be put on-sale/on-rebate is to dump the products because they are either out-dated, or not selling. For example:

"How to Increase Sales with eBay Markdown Manager, Part 1"

"Stores like Best Buy use sales to increase buyer interest and traffic. If you are a movie buff, you know that Tuesdays are when Best Buy discounts that week's "New Release." This drives buyers into the store and increases the likelihood that the customer will add a regularly priced item to their order. I'm sure Best Buy has sales data that shows "Sales" increase the AOV (average order value) over non-sale periods. The sale will generally last no longer than 1 week and then those new releases go back to their regular price."

Yup, yup, yup ! :D

Yeah they specifically announce new models at ever lower prices just so they can discount them and clear out the inventory. Thanks for the chuckle, Einstein! ;D

Hmmm... Last year I bought a new laptop, which had a rebate. It's still a great laptop by this year's standards.

I bought a Netgear ProSafe 802.11 a/b/g access point which had a rebate. Works better than the piece of crap Engenius/Senao router (NO rebate) which I quickly returned.

37" LCD TV/Monitor, true 1080p, two years old... Still catches everyone's attention who comes over. "How come this thing is clearer than my plasma set?" 1920 horizontal pixels versus 1366. Duh. Oh, and BTW, it had a rebate.

Kitchen aid mixer, three years old... Same model that's been around for 15+ years. So strong it can eagerly snap and mix a wooden spoon into the batter without a complaint. Oh yeah, had a rebate.

My wife's Altima, bought new. Not a single thing has ever failed on this car. Had a dealer rebate. My Pontiac, also bought new? Not much trouble until recently -- windshield washer pump dead, fan blower only works on high, power steering pump failed... Come to think of it, no rebate! 8)
