This is still pretty cutting-edge stuff at this point and I cannot tell you whether they've updated the rules to address this. You can stream certain segments of BBC programming via the web if you are in the UK (they know from the IP address). The licence fees pay for this, but I don't think that the internet stuff requires a licence. In fact I am inclined to say no.

However, if you have a tuner card and can pick up TV via your computer either inputted from OTA or cable, then yes the law would say that you're required to have a licence. In other words, they would consider your computer to be a TV at that point and all the rules apply.

I would think so. The only blackouts seem to involve local home games in the US (in-market); all live Jays home games in Canada and all live games in Japan and South Korea. Nothing in the small print talks about viewing from elsewhere.

And, it has to do with where you are (IP address location) rather than your billing address. They know where you are (or think they do). Example: I was in PA and I had the MLB TV package last year. Wanted to watch the Red Sox game and forgot that I was connected through my company's intranet at the time. Kept getting a message that the game was blacked out in my area. Finally realized that they thought I was in a Boston suburb where our company was based. Disconnected from the intranet and voila! The game was now available to me.

NASN/ESPN America: I cash in my hotel points every at the London Marriott Grosvenor square. I'm usually there in November on my way to a trade show in Germany, and March, which is usually a mix of business and time off. In November you get a few NCAA and NFL Football games.....usually including a Sunday NFL doubleheader starting at 6pm London time. Quite a bit of tape delay stuff but some live. In March you get college and NBA hoops and NHL....again, some live, some tape. You also get the usual complement of golf, tennis, NASCAR, etc. The fact that the licence fees have gone up from the 109 quid that I remember doesn't surprise me.

Old Style: No one was more surprised to see daughter's bf quaffing the stuff than me! Especially since he works for Guinness! (actually he's an editor for the Book of World's Records, which is now separate from the brewery). He normally makes fun of American beer....with the exception of Goose Island, Sam Adams, and a couple of others. At home, in addition to Guinness, he usually goes for Fuller's (Pride/ESB) or Bombadier.

Me? Usually Fuller's, Spitfire, or Young's (or whatever of the "guest ales" the boyfriend thinks I might like). Daughter? Fuller's (London Pride)... although she was drinking San Miguel (Spain) when I was in London a couple of months ago.

Yes, then it's somewhat like ESPN's Latin America feed - though they are soccer heavy. Kind of a "best of" American sports. Which is about as good as they can do.

Like all other taxes and fees in the UK, it's gone up a lot. Interestingly, Japan has a similar deal with NHK and people have stickers posted by their front doors to signify that they paid. I think the Beeb has the data electronically now. All very foreign concepts to us (thankfully).

The Old Style discussion is amusing! I guess there's no accounting for taste!! Guiness, Fuller's (forgot to mention them) and Bombardier are fine brews too. Never tried Spanish beer.

Not unless they were also sending it up on one of the European satellites unscrambled (which could happen once in a great while). You're out of the footprint of our satellites, so the general answer would be no. You can't even "dx" them. The curvature of the Earth won't allow it.

Different feeds. CNN is similar to the U.S. format....complete with Larry King and a couple of other U.S. based programs. But most of the news/sports/weather content is Europe-centric. So the overall content is closer to what you get on BBC News or Sky News. For major breaking news, they'll occasionally take the live feed from CNN in New York and/or Atlanta. This was the case last November when I watched the election coverage (at 3am) from my hotel room in Germany.

CNBC is basically a blend of business news and news....again, with a European perspective. The difference with CNBC is on the weekends, they throw in some NBC entertainment programs....such as Tonight show reruns from the preceding week. I don't watch it as much as CNN or BBC News.

Generally speaking, CNN and CNBC are the two American channels available in hotels anywhere in non-English speaking Europe. Usually accompanied by BBC News and Sky News.

Did someone say beer? I did try some of my daughter's San Miguel. Seemed okay, nothing special, but I didn't really have enough to form an opinion.
