HD Radio Anyone?

My interest was piqued recently in Hudson Valley HD radio with the recent upgrade of WGNY- FM- HD2 translator ‘the drive’ on 95.7 as well as WQSH -FM HD2 debut of Hot 99.1. How many people actually listen to these HD stations, or is a translator the only way to get hem noticed. I was reading on the HD radio message board here on Radio-Info .com many comments how HD radio still has numerous problems with signal range and reception reliability. They also note that very few people have or even care about a HD radio. My question is; How many people (yourself Included) do you know of that own or listen to HD radio. I don’t know anyone who does.

HD radio is standard in all BMW's. In mine, the radio actually has excellent sensitivity. I can hear WPDH HD-2 (WEOK oldies simulcast) drop out free from south of Fishkill to Germantown / Catskill.

Clear Channel's HDs in Albany are OK, my favorite being WKKF-HD2 (classic hip hop); WRVE-HD2 has a jazz format and WTRY-HD2 has an all-80s format last I remember...

I just started fiddling with the HD radio again after having it on the shelf next to Not worth the trouble if you aren't within 10 miles of a bunch of stations.

I set up a Sangean HDT-1X, slightly higher end receiver. At the cottage in southern Columbia County, PHD-2 was all that would come in regularly, with limited interference. Conversely, AM 1390-WEOK comes in unimpeded. Took the same unit to a buddies cabin in Broadalbin. WKKF HD-2 came in well, but not much more. In both cases I used external antenna with rotor.

The same unit placed 35 miles from the ESB in Westchester County didn't hold any frequencies enough to listen to.

More expensive unit, harder to tune and keep a frequencies and there are very limited choices more than 20 miles from tower sites. There are some good choices available on HD frequencies, receiving them is challenge. It shouldn't be a surpise HD radio isn't catching on. I figure in the coming months the HD radio will be on the shelf for good next to the C-Quam unit. I think the market has determined its not worth the cost or effort at this time.

I hope that maybe someday, CC, Cumulus and Pamal are going to add HD radio stations as well. WGNY and WPDH also has HD running, but I hope that maybe Clear Channel will be next to add HD stations to the Poughkeepsie market. For example WRNQ's HD-2 which will be "Classic Lite", WPKF HD-2 will be classic hip-hop, WRWD HD-2 which will be classic country and so on. If "Star 93.3" gone, why not put it on HD-2 for Hot AC. That would be great. Tell Cheap Channel to add HD radio to these stations. All of the CC HV stations are lacking HD radio stations.

More HD stations will come about when more people have HD radios. More people will have HD radios when more stations are available. Who has the wallet that will blink first?

The Sangean HD tuner here has been collecting dust for well over a year now, and the HD tuner in my car is set to be removed very soon. Yes, the tuners are sensitive on FM, but non-HD listening on AM is just horrid with one of these things. 4.5khz analog bandwidth just won't cut it, esp. on a music station like AM 590, and the gain circuit on AM will drive a person mad when listening to weaker signals, esp. in the car. Nice little toy it was, but the addition of a handful of fringe format HD-2/3 channels just isn't worth it.

Pamal already publicly stated a few years ago they are not doing it in any market. ever. Other than PDH it's a waste for the rest of them. It just doesn't work well on Class A's unless you live super close to the tower, especially for 2 and 3. It's issues on AM are widely known too and many big stations and other markets have shut it down (on AM). It's already been written off as a major tech failure of the last 10 years. Those that are using it probably will because it's installed until it breaks, otherwise I doubt it'll expand much further. It just didn't take off.

From what I remember Pamal said they are not going to do it in any market, unless there was a increase in market share of the receivers to make it worthwhile. I don't think the word "ever" was ever stated.

By whom? (Other than pundits on this board). State your sources on this one.

In my opinion: HD on AM is a failure. That's an opinion of mine. I don't like the sound quality for it, the amount of noise, the 5khz bandwidth, the interference, is dead. HD on FM, however, has a lot of potential. The ability to provide sub-channels, the elimination of "picket fencing" on RF when driving, the improved stereo separation. And before I get written off saying that "you can't tell the difference in stereo separation in a car", I have a high end system in my car, and I can tell. I think , though, to the average joe, the sub channels and the cleaner signal (again, the picket fencing and other multi path artifacts) are the biggest selling points for HD on FM. Again this is my opinion only.

No problem! http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-10288870-82.html

Enjoy.

On AM it's a train-wreck. The noise all over the band now is horrific. On FM the quality is atrocious, there just isn't enough bandwidth (heck stations' internet streams sound better); the signal penetration is a joke even with the latest power increases and I won't even get into the adjacent interference.

Who wrote it off? Joe Q public. 10 years later, how many people went out and bought one, particularly if it wasn't just included in a new car perchance. Actually how many people even know it exists? I'd bet 80% don't. If it was any other piece of tech it would have been recalled a long time ago. It attemptED to solve a problem no listener had and was essentially the result of a knee jerk reaction of watching the rest of the world move to digital formats in one way or another. At this point its best use is to stick other formats on translators.
