HD Radio DX

I am going to be a new HD radio DXer and I was wondering, is the Insignia NS-HD01 any good? Because I don't have enough cash for a tabletop so I just broke down and bought the 50 dollar one from BB.

That's kinda like buying a surfboard for use in Nebraska. I do wish you luck.

I did heard FM HD DX on May 1st by E skip, 3 stations in FL, and on June 3rd, one FM station in Mobile, AL here in VA, but only with a Sony XDR-F1HD and Ccrane Reflect dipole.

I've had good luck with the Insignia radio. I've got 4 new DX catches from FL & LA since I bought mine in April. Here in Southeastern WI, that is good. I got about 1100 miles.

The sensitivity is extremely good for a Walkman-type radio, & the selectivity is incredible as well. Since it uses the headphone cord as an antenna, you can easily move it for best results. If a station is transmitting in HD, the radio is very quick at picking up the HD call letters, which may help in IDing a station.

It does, however, tend to overload if you get close to more than one local station at a time. Also, don't expect HD radio reception on E-skip. The fade ins & outs of E-skip are often too quick to get a lock for full HD reception. Therefore, hearing the HD subchannels is highly unlikely via E-skip.

I do also have a Sony XDR-S10HDiP tabletop HD radio that has far better selectivity & sensitivity, that I connected to a C. Crane FM Reflect dipole antenna. This is a great set-up. The only downside is that the antenna isn't movable.

I wasn't planning on using it for skip. On tropo yes, but I know how unstable Es are.

Mine's been pretty hit and miss. Great selectivity, so-so sensitivity. It does pull weaker adjacent channel signals out from stronger local ones - I give it credit for that. In my unit, it almost seems like the performance varies from day to day, which is odd. Even on its best day, I must point out that it never outdoes the G8 or PL-310 and I've tested it many times.

Personally, i'd say you are better off dxing with a Grundig G8 (basically the same price) or a Chinese Tecsun PL-310 - each outperforms the Insignia. However, if your choice is between the Insignia and whatever garden-variety Sony Walkman they have in the store - then I'd go with the Insignia*. It is pretty good for a radio of its size and is very convenient to carry around. It also offers RDS, which can be helpful.....if the signal is strong enough for your radio to decode it.

*As long as you don't care that it doesn't offer AM.

I have a AM/FM tuner that has RDS. I want only FM since I have it best for Tropo DX conditions. Speaking of Tropo, KRXO 107.7 OKC is blasting in now.

I don't have HD Radio and don't intend to get one anytime soon, if ever, but judging on various reports from this and other broadcast reception related message boards, it sounds like HD Radio DX is almost every bit as difficult to receive as ATSC Digital TV DX, thanks at least in part to the "Digital Cliff" effect. This goes for tropo and E-skip on FM HD (as well as DTV) and skywave on AM HD as well. You will need an excellent outdoor antenna or, in the case of AM, a giant loop antenna, as well as a receiver with both excellent sensitivity and selectivity.

Please keep analog radio and stop IBOC (especially on the AM dial!!).

This radio doesn't have AM so I will use my Grundig for that and the Insignia for the FM.

I used my portable HD radio to DX today's e-skip, and I IDed one station because I was able to decode the HD: 94.9 KCMO

The RDS was also useful to get a couple more stations IDed but since e-skip fades rapidly, the RDS doesn't completely decode.
