HD Radio in Pittsburgh

So what's the verdict on HD Radio in the 'Burgh? I live in Washington Township, Westmoreland County (Only about 25 miles from Pgh) My little neighborhood has TERRIBLE FM reception simply because of the terrain and God knows what else. I am at the base of a hill, so I guess that doesn't help! Anyway, what is everyone's opinion on HD radio? Would it be worth someone like me purchasing one to improve my reception?

It won't improve your reception. It works like a cellphone, either it's perfect or you get nothing (it reverts to the analog signal, actually). There are no intermediate levels of signal strength.

In this case, my guess would be that it would not be a good investment. Maybe try a car radio that has it first and see what you get driving around your local area.

When all is said and done, I have the feeling HD is going to be about as important as AM stereo was.

Lots of talk within the industry, very little impact in the marketplace.

If stations use their HD streams correctly, the technology should work as a succesful medium for them.

As far as buying a radio, Parttimer is right about the signal coverage. Maybe you should wait until prices go down more before investing.

I have been pro HD (Hybrid Digital) radio for years, WLTJ has been broadcasting in HD since early 2005 with multicasting HD2 (classic rock) and HD3 (urban AC)
I live in West Virginia and travel to Pittsburgh everyday, and as for fringe HD reception the old school rules for analog broadcasting applies to HD as well. If you are getting a weak analog signal you'll get no HD signal lock either. I won't bore you with why and how HD works but in my travels along the I-79 and I-70 corridor the strongest HD signals in my drive through Washington County are 92.9, 102.5, 94.5 and 90.5. And the 2nd best are 96.9, 104.7, 107.9, 89.3, 89.9 and 1250AM/HD and last 96.1, 93.7, 100.7, 90.9 and 101.9 out of Morgantown. 99.7, 98.3, 103.5, 104.3, 106.7 & 95.3 are not in HD, and the Wheeling cluster isn't HD (yet)

The price of HD radios are dropping, the best for your automobile is still the JVC-HDR1 you can get that for around $150.00 or less. I paid over $300.00 just 15 months ago. and that got stolen 2 weeks later so I installed a 2nd unit. stolen 2 days later. got to love Pittsburgh parking lots

Costco sells the Dice HD adapter for your factory installed car stereo it's around $300.00 installed, it currently has a rebate. http://www.costco.com

I currently use the Directed Electronics HD adapter for my factory installed car radio (not stolen yet). http://www.crutchfield.com sells that and the JVC-HDR1 as well.

as for a tabletop HD radio I recommend and own the radiosophy HD100, I got that for $60.00 after rebate http://www.radiosophy.com

if you have any questions about HD radio just email me
