HD Radio in Sacramento?

What stations are going to be in HD soon? Any HD-2 formats? Was that Chris Kidd on KGO doing the news a couple of weeks ago? Is he going to return or was it just a one time gig? He seemed just a bit nervous but quite good!

I answered this on the Central California board in response to a similar question about Fresno.

The consortium of station owner groups agreed that they were only going to activate HD-2 streams in the largest markets, to see if it jumpstarts HD receiver sales. I doubt they will do it in their smaller markets until they see results in the majors.

Absent the "big boys" doing it, I don't see it happening very quickly, since there is no FCC mandate for implementation.<P ID="signature">______________

You're going to see Y92.5 and V101.1 go on the air with an HD-1 carrier in the next few months.

I don't believe either of those stations will be supplying an HD-2 or 3 stream.

Scott Fybush has reminded me that the consortium did bypass some top 50 markets and included some smaller markets. While I'm not sure of their reasoning, it renders my opinion somewhat moot.<P ID="signature">______________

CBS Radio (KQJK-93.7; KYMX-96.1; KZZO-100.5; KSFM-102.5; KNCI-105.1; and KHTK-1140) has shot down the project in Sacramento for now, deciding that only the larger markets will get HD for the present moment. CBS is spending a ton of money on modernizing the TV plant in West Sacramento at the moment, and will not be upgrading radio for some time to come -- other than, perhaps, adding streaming.

I'll amend and/or add to my previous post. I'm rather impressed with the role Clear Channel is taking in launching HD across the country. They’re either going to be hugely successful when radio sales take off and market penetration increases or they’re going to be out a ton of capital for all the improvements. I hear rumblings that the Sacramento CC FM's (Y92 and V101) will contain both a rebroadcast of there analog counterparts on HD1, but additional programming on the HD2 carrier.<P ID="signature">______________
