HD Radio in the car?

I am looking at buying the new JVC KD-HDR1 car HD radio when it comes out, but I have a question first.

Those who have HD radios in their cars all ready, how well does the digital hold while driving? Does it constantly drop out and return or for the most part does it hold its own?

(And no, I don't want to hear from the people who just have an ax to grind about HD radio or IBOC, do that somewhere else, I want to hear from those who are legitimate about it).

In the metro markets I dont hear a single drop out. When you get to fringe areas (beyond the 50bDu) you may get dropouts. On HD1 it will transition nicely to analog. HD2 will of course mute. I have found this applies to AM and FM.

I have listened in marlets such as Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, and various other markets that have HD Radio.

I had a Kenwood loaner for about 2 months. It's a great tuner. My driving area was Boston, Springfield, Hartford and Albany.

Expect that the digital signal will drop off about 7-10 miles before the analog becomes annoying to listen to. I ended up forcing the receiver into digital rather than auto mode. All but one station was processing each mode identically, so mode switching wasn't very noticeable. Analog and digital were synched, so no delay on any station when the mode switched.

I preferred the drop out in audio, similar to satellite, over mode switching.

I think the JVC will be unavailable for a while. I think every radio station in the country has one on order. Crutchfield is the only source I've found and they've been sold out since the February 6th release date.

I'm thinking of buying one and making it portable, so I can use it inside and out. I have a 35 amp 12v source at home. I can't use it as the headend in my car because everything I have relies on the Pioneer IP connection. I can use it as an analog input to the existing system.

I'm waiting for some comments from people who own one, specifically regarding digital sensitivity. The price is cetainly better than a separate headend and a tuner.

If you get hold of one we'll all expect a detailed report.

If it was WPKX 97.9 in Springfield, that has since been resolved.
