HD Radio in The Hudson Valley

Hudson Valley broadcasters have got some work to do in regards to HD Radio (although the entire industry hasn't been doing too great either.)

It's pretty unfortunate that only three FM stations are broadcasting in HD (WPDH, WOSR and WGNY) while only one (WGNY) is using the multicast technology.

Regarding AM from The City of New York, I can't get reception in southern Orange County with any AM stations, not even WCBS and WABC which both are pretty clear in the area on standard radio.

HD Radio has so much opportunity, but it seems as though broadcasters just aren't interested or haven't realized the benefits.

But this is an problem with HD as a whole in America. But the Hudson Valley is absolutely horrible compared to the rest--and that's pretty bad. Broadcasters in The City of New York have been doing much better but suburban and exurban listeners in the Hudson Valley haven't been able to experience any of it because of weak signals.

Any thoughts?

Sure. This one is easy. ZERO MARKET.

Pamal has a new tower that is HD capable for WHUD, yet they have publicly stated they have no intention of using it.

Been to a few different local electronic stores? How many of them are pushing HD radios?

...exactly. That sums it up. You are talking about market 139 and 161. Outside of WSPK, WHUD, and PDH, who even has a decent distance on their FM signal? Look how long it took for WRRV just to stream online... I wouldn't hold my breath for HD.

1) no market. most non-radio folks don't even know what HD radio is.
2) there is more than enough radio in the market already. The last thing we need is more poorly programmed radio.
3) there is a school of thought that says having HD sidechannels weakens your main signal. In the Hudson Valley, coverage area is very important.

HD radio only works in big cites and the nearby suburbs (no more then 30 miles from the city).

WHUD, WPDH and WSPK are the big stations which basically blanket the whole valley. The rest of the HV stations have tons of problems unless you live within 10-15 miles of the transmitter. I live in Newburgh and on a regular FM radio some of the Poughkeepsie stations class A stations barely come in a clock radio and have tons of static depending on where you drive within Newburgh. One area Poughkeepsie stations blast in another area the NYC stations come in very clear.

The way most HD radios are now, I have to turn the set and wiggle an antenna to get the HD signal. Radio is very challenged to get listeners who have many options other than radios. To ask them to sit there in fiddle is rididulous.

Today's youth needs that hand free for the cell phone. Like it or not, take your HD radio and put it next to your AM-Sequam Stereo radio.
