HD RADIO IN THIS AREA

I just picked up an HD Radio, and I have a few questions about some of the stations around here. KROI 92.1 has a HD stream, but my radio can not lock on to it even though my signal is good. Anyone else has this problem. The third channel on KKBQ is silent. Has it always been like that? I sent a voice mail the C.E. I have noticed
that some stations even though have an HD signal, the do not have sub channels. Most run one sub channel, while KKBQ and KUHF and TWO sub channels. Just trying to figure out if running 2 subs like that takes away quality from that stations other sub channel and its main HD stream?

One final question. The AM stations that have HD have no sub channels. Probably because there is not enough “room” to pack an analog and a digital signal in the small frequency space allowed. If they were to drop that analog signal, could they then have sub channels.

OLD CHICAGO

When I had my HDRadio hooked up out at Lavaca county KKBQ had country ledgends simalcasting on HD-3 They had it turned off for a while, they may have some problem with it. I'm back to analog out there I dont know, I believe HD signals has 96kbps to work with on bandwidth I think most of the mains are broadcasting in 48kbps? Correct me if I am wrong...
I dont believe Houston HD signals are as strong as they should be. My home place is about 60 miles from San antonio and I am DX'n HD pretty good now, between 59 and 63 db gain on the HD signals, hopefully someone can look at it after this post. I enjoy HD Radio when it is working right!

Yeah, KKBQ was simulcasting KTHT.
KROI's HD signal is actually pretty strong. I haven't checked it out lately, so it may be an engineering problem down there.
I think this may interest you as well, KHTC was running an HD-3 subchannel not long ago as well. It was the NOAA Weather Radio. They stopped about a month and a half ago.

Running only one subchannel (HD1 and HD2) should still get you good quality, but once a station turns on three channels (HD1 HD2, and HD3), that's when you can notice that the quality goes down (like a 96kbps or lower). I think from past posts, I've read that running one subchannel (HD1 and HD2)should still run at almost equally CD quality.

Its pretty much like any digital stream; including HDTV..you have a total b/w to deal with..you can divide it how you want to but you pay the price. Yes, on AM, there is not enough room for a HD-2 right now..a SD or LD (lower def) is possible...
Same with FM; play one -two channels of HD stereo and you are left with not enough for a 3rd HD but enough for a 5kHz or so b/w channel (good enough for talk)...
