Oh, the space-before-exclamation point thing was a joke. Some folks seem to think it is needed(space)!

I can usually pick out KMOX/1120 St. Louis from the edge of WTAM here at night, and it's a 50KWer just 15 miles north of where I sit. I imagine if the IBOC was on at night, that would go away."
You are so right - here are two links, to back that up:

And as someone who knows the workings of radio well, I agree with you - though I would personally miss being able to hear KMOX and other near-adjacent-to-local stations at night on the AM band. I also don't believe any technology which camps on adjacent channels is a good idea, even if the radio "business works" means it doesn't mean much other than affecting those of us who do listen to out-of-town stations occasionally.
But that's mostly nostalgia. If I really have a desire to hear KMOX here in Ohio, they now stream their signal in much better quality via the Internet. If someone in St. Louis wants to hear WTAM, ditto.
There are still some things that I believe (as a layman/non-engineer) need to be worked out with the IBOC AM adjacent-channel issue, which is one reason that the technology is not being used on a widespread basis at night. But overall, the "we can listen to late night radio from out of town under the covers" issue is more romantic than practical.
