HD Radio is dangerous

The car problem is an easy one to deal with...finish development of an HD converter. Next up will be putting it into portable radios.

Others can speak to this with more knowledge than me, but I've heard portable radios and HD Radio don't mix. An HD Radio Walkman is out of the question and can't happen. It's a power consumption issue, I think? The antenna problem probably doesn't help, either.

A boombox would need a power outlet.

Actually Mike Samsung has a XM portable and I have it. It works very well,and I listen to it outside while working on the yard,etc. Delphi is suppose to have one as well.
 
Actually that "thought" about birds getting killed by radio towers is true. They slam into them, while flying.

It's coming. When's the last time anything electronic didn't get smaller and more efficient over time?

There is a smaller and more efficient HD Radio chipset in development now at TI.

That is interesting. A real engineering company like TI is having to take the lead to clean up the HD Alliance's mess. Time will tell if they are able to do it.

That's the point. TI has the R&D team to get the job done.

They obviously also think they will be able to sell lots of these chips. Apparently they think HD Radio has a bright future - otherwise why bother?

I went on a quest yesterday to find an HD radio so I could check out all this "wonderful-ness" for myself and be more educated on my posts about it. Fry's is a pretty large electronics place, and should have at least SOME cutting-edge equipment there. After looking through all the home receivers and stereos and portables, then all the car stereos...there was ONE car unit that actually had the HD logo on it. Typical Fry's, I couldn't find a salesman to figure out how to turn the thing on (not the unit, but the huge display that requires a code to pick what unit the power is routed to.)

But the good news here is that this unit, a name brand that escapes me now (I think it was a JVC) was priced at $199! So the $400 and $300 price barriers have been broken (and no, I don't want to hear about the loss-leader deal that Radio Shack threw post-Thankgiving for $99...that was a one-shot deal.) I'll try Radio Shack next to what they have, and if they even know how to work it (or even know what HD is!)
 
I have the JVC $199 unit in the car and it works just fine. Puts out more than what I require...if you want the "boom" you probably have to add some more stuff to it but for standard listening, this unit will do just fine. Opt for the $50 install by Fry's or Car Toys too...WELL worth it at the end of the day!
