HD Radio... leading to more jobs?

I could put this in the HD category, but it's more of a general comment/question.

With HD channels being rolled out, won't you need more talent, more music directors, etc? Even if the HD2 channel would utilize existing talent from the main channel via voicetracking, I would imagine that the man hours to do imaging/music/etc would lead to SOME new jobs, especially in larger markets.

If HD takes off these stations might even be more of their own entity, leading to even more jobs.

Am I crazy, or is this good for our future earning power all the way around. Heck even if they are just voicetracked auotmated stations, jocks will have to get something extra.

In this day and age, post-AFTRA, jocks don't "have" to get something extra for VT-ing more stations. And, I see you're an APD--guess who's gonna get the job of music directing, selecting, monitoring, etc. the HD channels? Guys like you, who already have programming positions, will have this "extra" thing dropped on you, with no more money...but more time commitments.

And I don't think live, local jocks are in the future for HD subchannels--at least until HD becomes more accessible. And even then, if the big stations can get away with making more with less (i.e., no jocks), it doesn't bode well for talent.

When you have Clear Channel taking full market signals, say the #1 biller in the market and a perennial top 3 25-54, live only two shifts out of a day--and *maybe* 4-5 shifts all week, how do you think they'll respond with "emerging" subchannels?

I doubt it.

You're such a cynic.

I don't attribute it to HD, but I do think there is a bright future for TOP air talent. In a world where distribution channels were scarce (radio broadcast licenses) then it mattered less what you filled them with. But in a world where
distribution channels are cheap and plentiful (traditional channels, HD Channels, online streaming, satellite radio, cellphone music, podcasts) you'll need proven air talent to win. And the demand will drive up wages.

That's for top air talent. The life of journeymen air personalities will be pretty much as grim as you describe.

The real upheaval is going to be for managers and sales people. Look for a lot of sales to go online. You're going to see media buyers booking radio schedules on Priceline... or a broadcast version of it.<P ID="signature">______________
