HD Radio - Long Station Names

I’ve noticed that 4 stations in my market are now using long station names on their HD radio signals instead of their calls or a short name. These are 92.5, 94.5, 97.9 and 98.7. My car radio and 3 HD receivers at home won’t display these names, so for these stations the display will just appear blank.

I have the old Sangean HDT-1X and that seems to display long names, even on some stations that display calls. These don’t appear to match the long station names, so I’m guessing it’s a different field. I’m in market #5 and it appears that some of the long messages that will appear on the Sangean are still default messages, as they say “HD Radio…HD-Radio.com”. In my market, 90.9, 103.7 and 107.5 will show the HD Radio message. 92.5, 94.1, 96.3, 98.7, 99.5, 100.3, 105.3 and 106.1 will show station names or slogans in the same field. Other stations seem to be blank.

On my Sony XDR-S10HDiP, 94.1 and 105.3 will show a long name, but this seems to be a different from the station name field and the other field the Sangean is showing. For example, 105.3 shows “105.3 The Fan” on the Sangean, “1053 The Fan” on the Sony and the station name is “KRLD”. So it appears that these are 3 different fields across the radios, plus the long station name field.

Anyways, a few questions for the pros:

1. Any ideas what fields are showing on each radio? I can’t find anything in the user manuals that state what fields are being shown.

2. With the 4 stations that run long station names, can these stations run calls or a short name simultaneously? Also, my car radio can receive software updates. Is the long station name a software or hardware issue?

3. Because many radios don’t seem to be able to display long station names, do you think it’s a good idea to use these? Or should stations use calls or short 4 letter names? With my car radio, archived station logos are a sometimes a mess with stations that show long names. I’ll often see the wrong station logo appear. This only happens to stations that have long names. Just kind of curious how this all works. I’ve read a lot of documentation, including the engineering documentation on HDRadio.com and I can’t seem to 100% figure this out. Thanks!

My DaySeqeurra tuner (M4) will show long names scrolling by on the 2nd line of the display, sometimes taking forever!

Branding is important. Is "long" branding in a PPM market good? I guess we will find out in a couple of ratings periods if the "long" brand names help. IMHO is stupid to max out the HDscreen or RDS to where it is useless. I bet the person who did this doesn't even have HD in their car radio or they are not local. As long as it looks good on a monitor and that's all they care about. You gotta love corporate radio.

It's essential so people will know where to come back to! PPM shows more listening occasions, but shorter in length... so having it clear to listeners where they were listening makes it easier to get them back.

That's a long term proposition. In most cases, stations do it now "because they can". In the long run, it gives greater visual identity to a station which helps... as long as listeners like what they hear.
