Actually, I would argue that there is a shortage of people that want mobile internet for other reasons. Most people that have internet enabled mobile devices have them out of necessity. They absolutely must be able to send and receive e-mail at all times. This is the sole reason I have mine.
Ask your typical 16 to 24 year old woman whether she'd rather have a PDA/Smartphone or a Razr-like phone. As long as they can text and talk on it, I think most younger demos would prefer sleek over functional.
Then there's money. These days, you can get a sleek, thin phone for free with activation. They don't give the smartphones away.
