HD Radio & RDS in Ocean County

So I got an Insignia Portable HD Radio.

HD is not of much use here in Ocean County.

In HD I get:

100.1 WJRZ and 104.9 WSJO. That's it. And neither has an HD-2. I had the "HD" icon come on at 93.3 WMMR, 95.7 WBEN, 101.1 WBEB, 102.1 WIOQ, 102.9 WMGK and 106.1 WISX but it never actually switched to HD, even for a second.

I get RDS displays on:
91.1 WWNJ
92.7 WOBM-FM
94.5 WPST
95.1 WAYV
96.1 WTTH
96.9 WFPG
97.3 WENJ
98.5 WKMK
99.3 WZBZ
99.7 WBHX
100.7 WZXL
(101.1 WBEB spotty)
101.5 WKXW
(102.1 WIOQ spotty)
103.7 WMGM
(104.5 WRFF spotty)
105.7 WCHR-FM
106.5 WBBO
107.3 WPUR
107.9 W300AO

However, this thing is an analog magnet! I can get WXTU at 92.5, 60 miles away *CLEARLY* while within 15 miles of WOBM-FM at 92.7! I'm also getting WTKU @ 98.3 clear as a bell from 40 miles away and less than 10 miles from WKMK @ 98.5!

I had this set since the summer and its a good little box....the ability to pick up stations is amazing for this unknown name, its better than my Grundig in many instances....I posted here a few months ago when I was in Seaside Heights there was nothing on HD-2 and in Wildwood there was only one HD-2 on the non-comm....the shore sucks for any HD-2's...or 3's....here in Philly its not too bad, it receives all the HD-2-3's but in local malls the HD's are a tough catch....the only thing I am not too thrilled with is there is no AM band and the charge only lasts a few hours, not 10 as advertised....and if you dont have a computer or USB port in your car you are out of luck...you have to buy an adaptor to charge...I still want to know when PST is going to launch Alternative on HD-2 that they have been barking about for years...

I got this radio on Black Friday. It doesn't have good HD sensitivity, but the analog sensitivity and selectivity is amazing. HD is reliable withing 25-30 miles of NYC. I could pick up WOGL just 2 miles from WMGQ. WKTU comes in fine 2 miles from WPRB. And I can pick up all the Philly HD2s within 25 miles of Philly. I once DXed WEBE 108 in HD 100 miles away from that smokestack in Bridgeport. And in Tampa last week, it got HD reception pretty well, and I could even pick up the Orlando stations first adjacent to the 100,000 watt flamethrowers. It's about as sensitive as my car radio.

Too bad I won't be using it much because there's nothing good on the radio anymore.

WPST does not transmit in HD. At this point, stations that don't already have HD will not upgrade.

Nick is right on, HD radio hasn't gained much traction since it was introduced. From what I can tell mostly radio people get them with the vast amount of the regular listening public ignoring it.

WJLK-FM has put ShoreAlternative on its HD-2 as of a few weeks ago.

A radio without AM disqualifies itself from serious consideration for me.
Heck, almost all new radios work so poorly on AM they're disqualified, too.
On one hand, they're so narrowband in the IF passband they might well be communications receivers, but then on the other hand,
they haven't got any real tuned RF section up front, so no sensitivity worth using.
Then there's the use of SQUARE waves for the mixer, so everything sounds smashed with no room to breathe.
For years now I've been referring to them as radio emulators....seems to work like a radio, but not really a radio.
I have a now-old Sangean 803 ATS that I can't listen to because of the high noise level in RF/IF conversion, and the
high level of hiss in the audio ampifier. I use it for the BFO to check and correct drift on my part 15 AM.

Really? No AM section? That's just seems willfully ignorant.

It's 2009, and some of the people working at Best Buy and Radio Shack still point to the Sirius radios when I ask about HD radios.

I got an Insignia radio over the summer ...
Worked great in San Antonio, where I bought it ... but, when I got home, I was kinda disappointed ...
On my regular radio, all I get in HD are WRAT and (sometimes) WJRZ ...
I also occasionally get WMMR, WRDW and WPEN-FM from Philly ...
