HD Radio Self Interference on FM

The background whine of digital carriers on AM has been driving me crazy for a long time, and lately I've been noticing high frequency distortion on FM stations running HD. There also seems to be more hiss in the background on some stations.

Radio World Engineering Extra has just published an article by David Hershberger of Continental Electronics that may help explain what is going on. It is available online at: http://www.radioworld.com/article/108074

This is the second article in the series. The first was published in August, but it is still available here: http://www.radioworld.com/article/105256

Both are worth reading.

The fact that FM noise increases to less than 40dB below carrier with increased HD levels is, as far as this old engineer is concerned, the whole ball game. What's even more unnerving is that some have the audacity to call that "quality."

I have a Technics ST-9030 tuner which is very susceptible to this problem, as he explains:

One of the local public stations just installed a new antenna which works much better in this direction. Their analog processing sounds great, but unfortunately the digital noise is unbearable on the 9030 tuner. I guess I'll need to get in there and make the post-detection filter mod.

They try to make everything in the world digital,,,, and say its better.. Im surprised they dont have Digital Food yet,,,,,, Try our New Digital Ham Burgers only 8.99 only avalable at Burger King HD specialty stores... >>>>PRICES AND PARTICIPATION MAY VERY,, not available in all area's.......hahahahahahahaha

Evidently NAG (National Association of Greasy Food) has more ethics and more teeth than NAB. They tried digital french fries at McDonalds a while back and found that they kept dropping out of the paper bags on the way from the store to the car, NAG came out against them and that was that.
