HD radio signals

I read somewhere else on this board that CBS was going to boost the power of all their HD signals. This would be welcome news as I have difficulty receiving a steady HD signal from their stations and all the others, even in Center City Philadelphia. I was especially looking forward to listening to KYW on WYSP HD-2 but I can't even get that at all. Granted I am on a first floor apartment, but you'd think in the center of town I'd be able to receive the signal.

I heard first-hand from an engineer at CBS Radio in New York that they will not be boosting the HD power to -14 because they would have to buy new transmitters for each station. WXRK was initially going to be upgraded first, but its new transmitter was shipped elsewhere to replace a transmitter that failed.

That shows CBS Radio's stance on HD radio. It's not worth it to replace a perfectly good transmitter just to spew out IBUZ at a higher power so that one more person can listen in HD.

But CBS could make some friends around the country by switching off IBOC on its AMs. I've been told that WBZ's IBOC sidebands sometimes interfere with first-adjacent KDKA within the Pittsburgh city limits. The reverse doesn't happen because WBZ is directional to the west (that is, toward Pittsburgh), whereas KDKA is ND. But KDKA's IBOC sidebands probably do sometimes interfere with WBZ within the Boston market but outside of the Boston city limits.

Similar to how Citadel ordered all of its AM stations to turn off the IBUZ generator at night because WABC and WJR were interfering with each other at night in the other station's market.

When will they learn that IBUZ hasn't resulted in increased revenue for the last 6 years

I would just rather listen to the AM stations on an HD subchannel of their FM sister stations. I love KYW on WYSP-HD2, traffic on the 2s in stereo FM. I've been noticing WMMR-HD1 cutting in and out when I'm listening to the rock guys of everybody in Paoli and their analog signal is not in sync with the digital signal.

WOGL's All-70's channel on their HD-2 signal is pretty good.

Of course, I exclusively listen to it online, and not via HD Radio...

Speaking of their online stream, I noticed that for awhile, they were not displaying the titles/artists of their songs on their player page, but as of yesterday, they were.

WXPN has been operating at -14 dBc digital power since June 18. In this case, the existing equipment was capable of handling the increase by a simple "front panel" configuration change. Any comments from the group concerning coverage (pro or con) are encouraged.

If CBS turned off the AM HD it would be better for all of us. What is the point of having KYW, and WIP if they are available on WSP DR2 and HD3? 1210 makes sense to leave in HD because thats the only available signal for the big talker. And WPEN why bother with HD on your AM?

Has WPEN's CP to increase day power from 25 kW to around 44 kW now lapsed? Or has it been tolled? If the CP is still alive, is there time remaining for WPEN to build it out and get it on the air before the CP expires? If built, the CP would somewhat improve coverage of south Jersey.

The FCC database indicates it was granted 06/06/2008, so they have until next June to construct. As far as I know, no new tower construction is required, but probably an upgrade in some of the phasor and LTU components and of course a bigger transmitter if they don't already have a 50..

Did you notice that the predicted population within the WPEN daytime 1 V/m contour is over 50,000? Many little "peanut whistle" AMs out there would like to have that many people in the 1 mV/m contour -- or even the 0.5!

My understanding is that WPEN has a pair of identical 25-kW rigs at its day site (the old three-tower 5 kW-U site in W Philly) and a second pair identical to the first at its night site (the WWDB site in E Norriton). I believe--but do not know for sure--that all four units are from BE. In theory at least, the output of the two boxes at the day site could be combined to nicely produce the CP's 43 kW. Either 25-kW unit could then serve as a backup. It has been done before but the technique is not without its problems; the transmitters must really be identical; close isn't good enough. Also, how much less than a 50-kW box the combining network would cost is another issue. Seems as though the network should not be as expensive as a 50 kW Tx; AFAIK, the network would use only passive components, albeit some very large and probably custom-made ones.

Out in Paoli, 1210 HD keeps cutting in and out. I have my AM anntenna sitting in a window. I wish it would stay locked in. Rush sounds good without the static. I'm sure at my parents' house in Cherry Hill, they would have no problem locking in to the big talker in HD since they are so close to the transmitter. We used to get 1210 in the telephone when I was young. I don't think it comes through their FiOS wire now.

Why doesn't CBS put WPHT on WOGL's HD3? They put their other 2 AM stations on WYSP HD2 and HD3.

They should do that. There's no reason not to do it.

If they're not going to do it, maybe they should at least put the Phillies games on WYSP HD-3 instead of airing WIP during those times.

If you want to hear Rush without the static, listen online. Sounds way better than analog AM.

Good idea. Laptop is sitting on the kitchen counter. That's how I do it during day Phillies games. Hannity, I just listen to on Sirius-XM.

Why does KYW spew IBUZ on 1050 and 1070 when it's also on 94.1 HD3? The FM HD goes further than the AM HD and can be heard without dropouts during thunderstorms (if you can see the tower). Isn't the point of AM HD to make the AM stations sound better? The FM HD is doing the same thing better than the AM station can. Why waste the money for installing and maintaining the HD transmitter for the AM station, there are starving kids in Africa that could use the money ;)

Bill, you are probably the only person listening to WPHT in HD. CBS should have just given the money it spent on "upgrading" WPHT to HD to you.

If CBS put WPHT on 98.1 HD-3, I wouldn't be listening on 1210 anymore. Listening to traffic right now on 94.1 HD2. Wanting to know how long down to Cape May this morning. Sounds like I'll be listening to Sirius-XM for a long time in the car.
