HD Radio Thoughts....

What are your thoughts on HD radio? Think it will make it?
I am for HD radio. I would love to buy a radio, but I'm not going to pay the price that it is at right now. They need to come down a LOT in the price range. AND put more radios out in diffrent stores than just a few. I still havnt even got a chance to hear it yet.

i agree with you jras20.

ive gotten a chance to hear the quality and i like it however when the price comes down and more access to the technology then the hd market will be hot!

I have a JVC unit installed an let me tell you it is outstanding! Awhile back I even heard radio disney(kids) on HD and they sounded good; but I agree the price needs to come down, and the car manufactures need to start introducing them with a new cars. I wish I had waited for the HD2 units, but I am just as happy with my first generation. I believe that once the prices do come down, and the clowns at best buy and circut city get people who know about these products, and push them, you will see them with resonable prices.

It won't experience real growth or reach critical mass for radio sales departments until it becomes a standard feature on factory radios for most vehicles.

I gues your one of the lucky ones that got to hear it. Every store I been to so far no one has even heard of it or dont have any.

i' ve used to have a list of stations and thier hd formats. i believe klbj-fm hd2 was to be blues, kgsr hd2-to be deep cuts. hot 93 hd2 to be old school. i forgot what kase hd2, khfi hd2 to be. i think that kvet hd2 is supposed to be a combination of classic rock and classic country. and also mix 94.7 hd2 is to all 80's, majic 95.5 hd2 is oldies , kpez hd2 is cont christian, there was also something to be on the beat 104.3 hd2' second format?, also kfmk hd 2 something also. well thats all i can remember.

click on broadcasters
then find a station
then select the state and then it would either list all in Texas or just the cities you select.

thanks mmnassour,
this was the list i got the radio digital information from. i gonna copy it again, hopefully i don't forget where i put it. thanks again.

I'm having a hard time understanding why it has taken HDradio so long to come out. XM and Sirrius started development and got the necessary approvails and within about 5 or 6 years, were on the air. Now Satrad has about 12 million customers, and radios are as low as $29 or less. HDradio has crawled, taking years to get a standard approved, and many many more years to get to market - with radios going for several HUNDRED dollars. Now, I would think it would be harder to pick up a 18K watt signal from 22K miles in space than it would be to manufacture radios to pick up a piggybacked digital stream from a few miles away ?? Sat radios are already on thier 4th genneration, HD radio is well ... barely on its 1st. I've listened to HD radio in Dallas and Austin, so far I haven't found any stores here that had a WORKING HD setup. I guess there is no incentive for people to get a HD radio, maybe the government needs to require radio to go digital like they have for HDTV ? Maybe a requirment for HD to be included in every radio manufactured after a certain date like the FCC requirment for ATSC turners in TV sets ? Unless something is done HDradio may become the first betamax product of the 21st century. ... Just my thoughts.

I just baught me a HD radio the other day from Radioshack I am DX'n to San antonio about 68 miles away, I can pull in the digital signals most of the time. I would love to see more channels out, I dont understand why all the Cox stations are in HD but none have split off yet. I really like KHFI's HD-2 channel they play a few dance tracks mixed in. The HD signal drops out every now and then. But it comes in really good better than I thought it would.

I wish I had known about the RS black friday sale. I was so disapointed when I was at RS's 'store one' in FTW and they had an HD demo, but it wouldn't pick up any HD signals. The sales person told me it would need an outside ant. to pull in a steady HD signal ( it had a simple 'rabbit ears' ant. connected). The sales person went on to tell me that RS has had a lot of problems getting the HD radios to pick up a HD signal in thier DFW area stores, she speculated it was due to the metal construction of most of the stores.

Like anything though, it works best outside. SR even requires that you have your antenna mounted outside. I have my antenna 20' up, It pulls in pretty decent most of the time. I like it so far those HD-2 channels fills in some of the gaps. Wish Cox would start spliting some channels now.

As long as you have to come up with contraptions to get a HD signal, HD is going nowhere with the exception of a few radio geeks. Kinda like CB'ers in the late 70's.

...and AM stereo, and quadrophonic, and betamax tapes, and digital compact casettes, and mini disks and the Phillips CDi, laserdiscs, 8 tracks...you get the point. XM may sound like crap, but has a whole lot more to offer than HD radio will ever have at the expense that is equavillant to buying a CD at Barns and Noble each month.
P.S. for the price of HD radios, I think the "radio geeks" would rather invest in a Playstation 3 or Wii. HD radio will be as useful as a quadraphonic reciever with a CD-4 modulator attached, as well as a GM AM stereo car stereo in an 1987 surburban.

FM HD sounds a LOT better than XM, sure XM has a lot more channels, but do you really listen to all of them? FM HD has a way to go, but I think in the long run it will work out very well. I am impressed with it already. I would never spend 600$ on a gamming system. Another thing about wireless internet, they may not support the radio reciever always.

Shoot FM sounds better than XM, much less FM HD. If I had three decent music channels on HD here in Austin, I'd rip that damned XM antenna off my car in three minutes.

So come on people whats the hold up?
San antonio only has 3 extra HD stations

Geesh, all these HD nay-sayers.. it's brand new technology, give it a chance! At the very least, it's more choice.

Comparing it to AM Stereo is silly, that was an FCC disaster and cost far less to do than converting a signal to HD. So at least there is a little more commitment on the broadcasters to make this work.

Be patient... the price point will come down (hopefully) on the radios and Jras20, remember there are only so many engineers in Central/S Tx to put these stations on the air. Each HD station requires an enitely new HD transmitter, and a load of new equipment. I know the Clear Channel Austin engineers had a few problems getting theirs up and Emmis had a lot of bugs with Bob at first. Also, I agree Rockin' Country on KVET and Jazz on Bob really sound good (they sound like they are being paid attention to).

Austin is on the right track at least, San Antonio and the engineers should be embarrassed not only by the quality of their programming, but the quality of their sound.
