HD Radio: "Yellow Alert"

LISTENER CONFUSION ABOUT HD RADIO"

"One percent of listeners say they have purchased an HD-capable radio. While a small subcell, two-thirds of them say HD is "a lot better" than regular FM.

These findings are based on 752 telephone interviews completed from September 13-17 in the U.S."

Judging the small survey sample size, the 1% would likely be smaller then the error percentage of the survey, and might just be caused by respondent confusion with the satillite radio or other device they actually bought.

I just found these interesting comments - HD Radio supporters realize there is trouble ahead. BTW, the Receptor HD has fallen to its lowest electronic sales ranking on Amazon to 13,000 - the lowest I have seen:

"I think everybody is hoping Best Buy and Circuit City will start carrying HD Radios, then you'll really see a ad blitz. It's hard to sell something that ain't there in most cases. Oh sure, I got mine at Tweeter, and I'm sure most of us could go online to get one, but we're talking about Joe Schmoe who goes into his Best Buy because he wants it today and he thinks the bigger chains have a huge stockload(ain't always the case, but....)"

"We need to see the automakers start making HD radios as standard as RDS is being done now a days. We also need to start seeing HD promotions at large events like state fairs and such. At the local Big E, there is a huge XM display, where's the HD display?? Nowhere, and thats a huge problem.Satellite could be a bigger threat than I think a lot of broadcasters think it is, and that attitude concerns me."

"In the past two weeks I've had two experiences that lead me to believe HD radio will have a hard time gaining traction unless a major shift in marketing occures. In both cases I went into Radio Shack stores in malls to see if I could listen to an HD broadcast on an HD radio. In one store the display was fairly good with several Boston Acoustics sets on display. Unfortunately, the sales guy couldn't get the radio to pick up the HD signals he swears he could get that morning. (we could get analog signals with lots of noise) However, he was able to show off the Sirius satellite radio right next to it quite well. The other store had the set pushed back on a shelf and all the promotional material was way in the back. I just happened to know what the radio looked like and tried to see if I could tune in anything. No such luck. In fact, I couldn't get any signals of any kind on the $300 radio. The sales guy had no interest in what I was doing. This set was also right next to the Sirius display that worked quite well. It's very simple: HD radio will fail if people continue to see that the $300 radios don't work and the $150 satellite radios do. The bigger problem to me is that people don't really know what HD radio is and probably don't care."
