HD Radio

I was reading in Radio World that manufacturers will start bringing HD radio receivers to the market between August and October. They are still trying to iron out multi-streams. Seems each signal can have an analog/HD, and 2 more HD streams.

Should broadcasters program 3 related formats like a classic rock on 1, a rock artist interviews channel and a Rock concert channel...

---OR-----

a rock channel, an urban channel and an ethnic channel?

Well its about time. Looks like the Auto Makers won't have HD in the stock radios for the 2006 models though.

I believe this multi stream capability is only going to be available for FM broadcasters. I would also point out that FM already has two analog subcarriers, and therefore I would assume that the additional FM streams will likely be as widely used as the current subcarriers are. Don't count on quality audio on the additional streams. As for text, that is also already available in the form of RBDS.

Honestly, I think HD radio is too little too late. Its just a more expensive way of doing what is already available in the analog realm. With Satellite Radio on the rise and Long Range wireless Broadband Internet in its infancy, I just can't imagine HD radio achieving more than AM stereo did. Its been over two years now that WOR has been broadcasting an IBOC signal, and Still I can't buy a radio that can receive it? Give me a break.

In Europe, where many stations already use DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), I have heard of stations broadcasting an analog FM signal, a 256kbps main digital signal, and two other subcarriers at 192kbps and 128kbps. However, I am not sure if this is the case with IBOC...aren't they different technologies?
