HD AM only has a limited range. For example for me if I'm more than around 25 miles from the stations transmitter the HD reverts to analog.

Would an amplified AM/FM telescoping or whip antenna help for HD reception in a vehicle? Those windshield or stubby antennas - I have my doubts about their effectiveness.
I have no idea if that would help, just a suggestion...

I have a home HD set and it does the same thing, I am on the fringe of the signal so that is the reason.
Sometimes I wish I could just turn the HD feature off so the set would not keep locking in and out of HD but alas my Sony set has no way to switch the HD off.

HD ? HDead ;)

I have the same problem.

This was quite a while ago - in a Best Buy Store, about 3 miles away from a 6kW FM station, using a Sony HD clock radio, with supplied "T" antenna - can't even get the local HD station in HD. What a POS! (Piece of Scrap) They should rename IBOC to ISDN: "It Still Does Nothing" Cat Whiskers and a Crystal gets better reception...

HD is truly a waste. My one and only HD radio is sitting in a closet and has been for 6 months. I'm sorry I ever bought it, but being a lifelong radio lover I had to try it.

While HDead may be a waste I do love my Sony XDR-S3HD, beside the HD signal fading in and out which has been solved by most broadcasters killing their HD signal anyway.

I'm looking forward to digging out and firing up my AM Stereo this summer. :D

How's the AM tuner on it?

Nothing to be afraid of - the HD AM either works well or it does not work well - that's the way digital seems to work in the real world. "Your results may vary"

If you're close enough to the transmitter it will work. If you're not it won't.

That's a shame that digital coverage doesn't equal or exceed that of the analog coverage. So much for progress...

I agree that's why my HD radio is sitting on my closet shelf.

This is supposed to be the 21st Century... This HD "system" is the laughingstock of the world. This is what happens when Iniquity bought off the FCC, we get junk - tuners that usually can't decode the digital signal reliably to a reasonable distance from the station and sound "quality" that is inferior to internet radio - and many other faults. I am going to wait until something decent comes along - in the meanwhile I'll listen to my other far better sounding sources.

The geniuses in radio, in order to squeeze every last $ out of the industry went with an inferior system.
Now they will pay the price down the road.

Well, now I know why reception is so bad. I bought an HD radio for my car. What a waste. But then again I had to try it.
The problem even here in Chicago is that the digital signal is much weaker than the analog signal.
Even in the inner suburbs the digital signal fades in and out. Analog goes much further. I am disappointed in HD radio.

I don't blame you for being disappointed.

What really needs to happen is for Digital Radio to become a reality as purely Digital, not Hybrid. Give Digital Radio their own frequencies and let the marketplace play it out. A place where the bandwidth is sufficient enough to give us true CD quality, where the signal is strong enough everywhere at least in the same coverage area that the station had as an analog station that it doesn't drop out.

HD Radio is not like when we went from Black & White to Color TV, there we just added a subcarrier and a few other things. Nor is it like adding an FM Stereo exciter to a Monaural transmitter. The idea for HD Radio is great on paper and in the labs, but superimposing a digital signal on an analog signal at 1% or 5% of the Analog power, especially given the bandwidths that AM and FM were set up for - Analog - has, as we know, proven to be generally unacceptable. The idea was noble to convert to Digital Radio using the existing AM & FM spectrum like TV did for its spectrum, but in reality Digital Radio may need to go to other spectrum to really be effective and a true solution.
