HD Radio

I am about to buy a new stereo for my work van. I was thinking of getting one that had HD. Would it be worth the expense? Will HD radio ever take off?

Hang on, let me turn off my Betamax before I answer that. Sure, it's here to stay. Don't sell technology short--I mean, KRQX celebrated their 26th anniversary last year as the only station in DFW broadcasting those great oldies in AM Stereo! I'd tell you more, but I'm short on time...my Edsel needs a quick tune-up before the rain hits.

Really, there's arguments on both sides. Right now, with no saturation of HD units, BUT with many HD stations streaming on the web, it stands to reason that HD radio could survive, but only with streaming as a crutch (I bet it'd be easier to sell an agency on an internet ad than an HD ad.) But, as it's been pointed out here before, it depends heavily on car manufacturer participation. But now you've got manufacturers cranking out Gen-X and Millenials-grade cars that have NO radio--just an iPod mount and a nice speaker system.

It's a crapshoot. For me, I'd spend that little extra to have more CHOICES on the dial, even if it's not a 'forever' thing...much like I enjoy my satellite radio, but knowing there will be an end someday.

It depends on what you like/listen to. Right now there isn't a whole lot to choose from.

If you're a classic rock or classic standards person, do it, it's worth it! 97.1 HD2 and 100.3 HD2 are the best channels around. Commercial free, non stop former hits.

The other stations I've checked out or tried weren't within my taste, so I can't give much info on them. A few talk stations or top 40's might be around. But for the same price as a CD player you can get one with a built in HD tuner and have commercial free music...Not bad. That is, if you're like me and not willing to shell out for satellite at this moment. The variety isn't the same (satellite has a wider range and selection), but like I said, the money for a CD player vs one with a built in tuner i almost identical.

I don't think it will ever take off. We might be stuck with whats currently available for a long while. I think it was a quick attempt at solving the Stern to satellite listenership, but no one (programming departments) really do anything with them. In fact, I wonder if some stations even remember they're broadcasting an HD2 channel...Then again, I would imagine that very few people even have or listen to HD channels...I had my HD radio in the car for a year before I tried them out.

You'll like it, but you wont see much expansion in the HD2 area for a while I suspect.

Well, you'll be able to hear the little Ticket clearly in the car on 99.5 HD-2. When I first got my radio I liked The Oasis on 107.5-2 but they run too many ads for me so I think I'd stick with Sirius XM. Now, if you'll excuse me I am going to go put a picture disc in and watch a movie.

KRLD-FM has 105.3 HD 3. All Cowboys all the time.
I don't know the programming schedule, but that was one of the things that CBS gave the Cowboys when they switched flagships.

The reason I was asking is that I found one with HD, Cd and aux inputs for about $100. I have XM now, and an Ipod Touch, but was wanting a couple more options. Thanks for the replies.

One of the many problems with radio today is content. There doesn't seem to be enough compelling/entertaining CONTENT on the air anymore. With HD Radio, you just get more of radio's crappy content... in crisp, digital, high def sound. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to pop in my 8 Track tape and crank some tunes!

I'll trade you my Jackson Brown 8 track for any Ted Nugent 8 track.

dont bother

HD radio is a failure and won't be able to take off. The technology is not stable, the marketing has been horrendous and the content is just not good enough to cause people to fork over the cash for these radios.

Ok time for the HD newbie to chime in:

I looked all around for an HD car radio and was sadly disappointed. I even checked the great Wal Mart and they have signs and the net alll talking about how great the selection was. Most were HD compatable, meaning you have to buy a seperate tuner!

Something from my childhood "Popped" into my brain. It was a vision of a Crutchfield catalog! I hadn't seen one in years!

So I checked on the net an Viola: They had a full line of stuff!

Here's what I got:

A JVC Arsenal class unit. It has all the goodies including CD, Aux input, USB/ipod input, removable faceplate XM ready and ipod tagging. I also had the option of BT use with my phone but I got the XM module instead. I got the Radio for $159 and the XM module for $79.

I took the whole thing down to Joseph's in Mesquite and they did a custom install for around $100.

Why this unit from other than the obivious?

It came with over $40 worth of install stuff free. This is great if you want to do an install yourself. The Arsenal series also has a 2 year vs 1 yr manufacturs warranty and qualified for Crutchfield's Signature Service. I call them up and give them my order number and I get tech support for the lifetime of the unit! At the time it was near Christmas and they also had a deal for free standard ship as well.

I just went online and told them what kind of car I had and it spit out all the choices that were compatable with my car!

So now I have AM HD, FM HD XM and CD along with the Aux Plug and USB! the sound is great! I've picked up stations in Austin, Tyler, Hot Springs and Little Rock while cruising through and its great!

Also with the Ipod connections, my niece can listen to her ipod though the stereo thus teaching me about the Jonas Brothers and I don't have to worry about here wearing earphones in her head all the time as well!

Don't know how old your van is but if your not a DIN size CF sells a radio with all the goodies and has standard old school shafts for older autos! ;D

Frys had a very nice JVC unit on sale for $99 a while back....that unit has a built in 7 band EQ, digital tuner..not just the readout, but a truly digital tuner..receives 1st adjacent FM stations with NO interference from the stronger adjacent channel! It also features a CD player, is I-Pod friendly and has a front mounted USB port, AND receives HD broadcasts. HD/FM is worth it just to eliminate the multi-path from your ears. A no brainer if you're thinking of an aftermarket replacement. Oh, and if you listen to 1080 KRLD, 620 Disney Radio, or the colon infomercials on KAAM, there's AM/HD, too!!

I'll have you know, John Summers, that after I used ColonBlow® for 30 days, and by following the detailed and fully-illustrated in-home regimen on the DVD they provided, I have never felt better! Food shoots right through me, I look 3 months younger, my navel lint count is down, and my vision has dramatically improved! And I'm saving money, too...my $300 a month Maalox habit has finally been broken. Thank you, ColonBlow®!

Next month, watch for the introduction of the all-new ColonBlowPlus® with patented Leak-B-Gone® and FistulaFixer®.

As someone who has tried HD radio before, I would not recommend the technology. The HD-2 stations in Dallas were cool for awhile, until they started canning all the formats. I remember KPLX-HD2 broadcasting CHR, which sounded great! Much better than 106.1. Then they got rid of that format to simulcast the Ticket. Recently, I read on here that KLIF-HD2 is now simulcasting 570. Before this, they had a great all 90's format.

Another side note, the HD signals will drop out from time to time (especially KLIF-FM). It can get quite annoying. HD radios will go back to analog signal automatically, but you can clearly hear it going back and forward. Sometimes the volume will go up 10 notches. Or sometimes you'll get an awkward "echo" sound. Or sometimes, the HD signal and the analog signal isn't synched properly. So sometimes, a song may "skip" ahead or "skip" behind, if you know what I mean. Yes, it can get very annoying. Also, if your on an HD-2 station, obviously the signal will just go silent if you lose the signal.

I also read that KSCS stopped broadcasting in HD recently. Seems like the channels you have to choose from are becoming more and more limited. I'd say just be happy with regular analog FM stereo. If that doesn't satisfy you, use an iPod or subscribe to Sirius XM. HD Radio just isn't worth it. I had HD in my car for about a couple years. This past summer, I finally got rid of my stereo and put in a much nicer one. I can safely say, I am much happier with a stereo without HD.

It's up to you, but I really do not think it's worth the money.

That being said, the HD really doesn't add much to the cost of the unit. You also have the option NOT to use the HD capability. The problem with analog and digital signals being out of synch is just a result of somebody at the station(s) not paying attention. Another bonus for some of who care about these things: I was told some time ago that no audio 'clipping' is being used in the HD/FM stations, something about thge 'HD Alliance', resulting in much cleaner sound. BTW, the F.C.C has recently approved a large power increase for HD/FM's. What can I say, I'm just a radio geek!

If the FM/HD-1 transmitter uses the same audio processor with dual analog/HD outputs then the volume jumps will not occur if the modulation levels are correct on the HD signal generator. When I was setting up several of the stations I toyed with using separate processors for a while, but quickly determined that the texture/dynamic change was not worth the annoyance during the transition from analog to HD in low lock areas.

In reference to the diversity delay, It takes attention to detail to maintain a station's timing down to the single frame level. However there are times when the diversity timing will "creep" which means a trip to the "Hill" to bring them back in line. On a side note, DXing AM is fun with HD if you've got a good loop antenna and can achieve "lock". I also enjoy the additional programming available via HD sub-channels such as KLUV HD-2, 100.3 HD-2, and on occasion 107.5 HD-2. But as the saying goes "One man's treasure is another man's trash" so to each his own.

Strangely enough, this was one of the units I was looking at. My van is a 2005 Chevy, so it's not that old. Actually has a fairly nice stereo in it now, but with no aux, so I have to use an fm modulator to listen to my XM or Ipod. I was mainly curious if it would be worth getting one with HD. Thanks for your input!

I am near Austin, and got a place about 80 miles from Houston, HD radio is verys. If you go about 40 miles out of the town then you can expect it to drop out to analog. I had a HD Radio in my truck, but since I live about 30 miles from Austin, the HD channels craped out a lot when I went under power lines and went behind buildings.

The only thing good that came out of HD was the sangean HD1X tuner I think. That is a Home unit, but you can force out HD and have analog only which is really nice to DX with or pick up local.

I did like the HD-2 channels in Austin until they changed up KVETS and KHFI's HD-2 they were the only ones I listened to. Mega is OK but most of those songs I already have on my mp3 player.

When I bought my Sony for the car, I saw that it is HD compatible but needs an outboard tuner - but from what I've read it renders the standard AM/FM useless. Given the lousy range of HD I chose not to get it until it is comparable with analog range. From what I've seen on HDTV you'll never get the HD range that you do on analog. You either have it or you don't. Analog is way more forgiving in weak signal areas.

And my favorite Nugent 8-track is Double Live Gonzo.
