HD RADIO's 750 MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION:

isn't it just a natural progression.. like HDTV is? something else we'll just get used to.. but my questioin... is the quality as significant a difference as it is in HDTV?? that u can really see a difference.. but can u hear it on the radio??

WHAT'S IN IT FOR THE LISTENER(consumer)?

There will be more high end audio frequencies available which is just dandy if you happen to be a dog or Superman. The big 'sales plus' is the additional HD-2 and HD-3 channels that station owners will be able to offer advertisers. Now you, Mister Business Owner, will be able to sponser Traditional Brazilian Tango Favorites on channel HD-2 in living stereo all from the comfort of your easy chair. Yes friends, grab the Missus and hurry on down to your favorite HD Radio store before it's too late! Be the first on your block to own one of these fancy high-tech devices and start enjoying all the advantages of spending $300 bucks to be able to listen to the same old crap you've been hearing for the last 20 years. Ahhh... but now it's in crisp clean digital audio. Even daughter Muffy will enjoy Sweet Home Alabama for the gazillionth time but now in digital quality stereo even your pet sheep will appreciate. Don't delay - hurry in today and start wondering why you even fell for the sales pitch to begin with.

Well I gotta go now. Time to watch a few old movies on my Betamax....

;D Ha!

further reponse: HD RADIO ALLOWS THE LISTENER TO HEAR THE CURRENT LACK OF CONTENT EVEN MORE CLEARLY.....then return to his or her i-pod, favorite CD, website, book, tv show, or favorite radio station

In response to Repti; the 58+ million people(combined) that listen to Rush, Beck & Hannity & (soon)IMUS don't care how crackly that AM signal is...they care about CONTENT.....

I'm not hearing the difference with my HD(yes I bought one...I'm a geek)...although I cranked my headphones REALLY loud for over a quarter century...... I might be High-DEAF

It's SUPPOSED to be the clarity "AM sounds like FM, FM sounds CD-quality". Also, the "stations between the stations". Heard HD sets on display in both Radio Schmuck....errr, SHACK as well as Sharper Image. Nope, I can't tell the difference. The HD 2 and 3 channels? Same crap, nothing to see here, move along.

How long before HD radio bombs and goes the way of "Quad FM" and "AM Stereo"???

Then, what becomes of the AM and FM bands after HD Radio tanks?

actually, i notice a significant difference in a.m. sound quality - far less tinnier, more beefy, and i enjoy the different programming on fm hd-2 channels from b104 and a.m. 1470. Obviously, it's supposed to be terrestrial radio's answer to satellite...which people aren't really paying for anyway. So it makes sense as to why it's not working out so well.

tinnier?? is that anything like timmer?? lol when he announces broadcasting in hd.. that will be the day hell freezes over lol. (sorry.. i got so used to people using these posts as shameless promos for wgpa i had to chime in lol)

Well I have listened to 95.1-2 and 104.1-2 .. which seem to be the only HD stations i could catch that have more than one HD station ..

I did like the Fresh picked hits on b104 .

reptimania - you got me...
actually, i had typed regular a.m. is tinnier...but you all know what i meant.

cisco is actually right - i don't think any other entities other than clear channel have HD side channels. if they do, they don't promote them.

here's a fun question - what should WLEV/WCTO/WODE/WWYY/WZZO/WAEB/WGPA/WDIY's HD side channels be?

funny would be wgpa with hd at all lol. and until half of em improve thier content... i ask... does it even really matter?? seems like most of the radio stations are on thier way with the dinosaurs and bethlehem steel.

Now, for limited time only GET A FREE HD RADIO AND A FREE JEEP LIBERTY TO LISTEN TO IT IN.....with the purchase of every 5 BIG MACS and/or 9 WHOPPERS and/or 13 SUBWAY VALUE MEALS. Complaining about HD Radio is like complaining to the cable company when they add more channels to your lineup.

"I HATE HAVING MORE CHOICES!!!!! LESS CHANNELS NOW NOW NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I remember my dad being so excited in 1982 when WSAN boasted being the first AM stereo signal in the valley. He thought it would revolutionize the band. Couldn't wait to get it in his brand new Dodge Caravan. As a 15 year old I disticntly remember saying to him, "What's the big deal? It's still CRAP. It's just that now you're going to separate the crap before you give it to me." Same thing today. Who cares about the clarity of what's coming through your speakers if you aren't interested in what's coming through in the first place? You don't catch me watching the Smithsonian channel just because it's in high-def and not watching ESPN News because it isn't. Like Ken said in another post. It's all about the content, not how it's served.
