HD RANGE

HD RANGE

I had a chance to listen to HD in the car for a day as I had a Scion loaner with a Pioneer Radio in the car. Most of my listening was to Freeform BCN on WZLX 100.7 HD3. I wish Sam and friends were on one of CBS's HD1 but back to the point. I commute through Boston going 20 miles north and 30 miles south of downtown. South of Boston WZLX signal is rock solid Got clear signal of Freeform BCN all the way to dealership in Raynahm. However, north of Boston on 93 was very different. Freeform BCN was dropping out all the time until almost Somerville on 93. Is the WZLX HD antenna side mounted on the Pru or more mulitpath going north? The Pioneer unit did pretty well with other major HD stations in Boston. The Pioneer unit AM section suprised me. WBZ-AM HD was solid . Even got Disney 1260AM to lock to HD in the parking lot at work during the afternoon.
ANother thing I noticed the Translator on 102.9 FM in Lawrence is broadcasting a HD3 signal. HD1 is Power 800 , HD2 is WCCM , not sure what the HD3 was but it seemed like a talk format.

Re: HD RANGE

I don't have an actual HD car stereo, but I listen to HD stations in the car by jerry-rigging an HD portable to play through an FM transponder. I know that reception using that method is inferior to a real HD car stereo, however, I also get good reception of WBCN Freeform on WZLX HD3 past Route 128 west and southwest of Boston, but north is terrible. It cuts out in many spots in Somerville, just a few miles line of sight of the Pru. The problem seems to be mainly multipath, as WZLX on HD1 is sometimes distorted and cutting back to analog in some of the spots where the HD3 disappears.

Re: HD RANGE

I have an HD car radio and I get much better reception than that. No problem with Free Form north of the city for me until past 128. Now sometimes you will here drop outs on HD2's and 3's that are not reception problems but are importer/exporter and network issue's. HD1's are always the main signal and delivered by standard STL shots but HD2's, 3's and 4's are often sent via low bandwidth network connections that do occasionally have issues getting from point A to B. This will cause drop outs.

That is dedication.

I like the programming on "WBCN Free Form Rock" (WZLX HD3), "Radio Mojo" (WZLX HD2), "Nothing But The '70s" (WROR HD2), and even occasionally the music of the old WODS classic hits format on their HD2. And, no commercials.

If it was as easy to change an in-dash car stereo today as it was years ago, I would have installed an HD car stereo myself, but nowadays I'm afraid of setting off the factory car alarm, or having the stereo not work due to anti-theft circuitry, etc... and I haven't felt like bringing the car in for a professional installation.

If it was a Spanish talk format on the HD3, it may have been translating WCEC 1490 AM in Haverhill, which they also own.
