hd receiver useless at the shore

... but many of these stations, the ones that *DO* have multicast channels are off the air for days at a time all too often. Sadly that really is pretty telling as to how the staffs at these stations perceive the technology. Too many glitches, next to horrible marketing, and miniscule coverage areas I mean REALLY???

SOunds an awful lot like FM in the early 70's....and that never took off...right? ;-)

For the longest time, FM was an automation box down the hall that no one paid much attention to. No self-respecting jock worth his salt would want to work on an...FM! Difficult to pick up, etc.

Luckily for me, I was good enough to eventually move on up to working for the AM station...;)

Also useless Danny Ocean.

I have been and remain a supporter of "HD" Radio. I think the ability to multicast can bring new audiences to radio and drive revenue streams. That said, we, as broadcasters, still have to uncloud the confusion that reigns supreme in the marketplace. Walk into an electronics retailer and ask for an HD receiver. They will probably point you to the HDTV or Satellite Radio sction.
Most non broadcasters that I talk to also seem to have no idea that there is such a thing as "HD" Radio. Again, they confuse it with TV or satellite radio. So we need to send a clearer message and perhaps use of the term "HD" hurts us more than helps us.
I am also keeping my fingers crossed that the FCC will grant the full power increase for FM HD broadcasters taking digital power to a minimum or 10 per cent of analog power. I don't see how we can improve penetration with anything less.

As for shore listening, I will be taking a long weekend in Wildwood starting 9/25 and will be taking my new Insignia portable HD receiver with me. It's not a bad little radio for under fifty dollars. Even if only HD-1 is available, it's still a fun listen for me.

My Insignia works really good but I am in Philly and close to most of the signals, what I did notice is this little gem is great in pulling far away stations in although not in HD. The furthest I can receive is WSTW HD-1-2 and 3 which is not bad for over 22 miles away. I did have my Insignia in Wildwood weeks ago that is what made me start this thread, nothing on HD but a few non comm, there are a few broadcasting with RDS, but nothing on HD, in North Jersey I only picked up the Rat and JRZ in HD with no sides....a real disappointment...stations should get on this bandwagon instead of just doing nothing I am surprised WPST and WJBR have nothing on HD...

I am sure that with budgeting so tight these days, the only thing some stations may be able to do is run the analog simulcast on HD-1. Still, interesting to hear what sonic difference there may be between the two. I have heard stations where the HD-1 sounded better than the analog signal, while others sound better on the analog side. One would assume that the difference lies in the processing of these signals. I have heard some stations where there was no difference btween the two.
Yes,the Insignia is a sweet little radio for under fifty bucks. It performs better than my Sony table HD radio for which I paid about $160. I did, however, replace he earbuds with better cans.

WJLK is back in HD - sounds pretty decent. Signal still isn't the best, but better than nothing. So that's 4 Mon/Oc stations in HD - WBJB, WJRZ, WRAT & WJLK.
