Hi -- I'm looking for about 45 seconds of help.

Do you have an HD receiver ?

If so, could you check for 30 seconds this evening and see what the two HD channels are broadcasting on WRTI (90.1) ? It should be HD-1 = jazz and HD-2 = classical … but ... that's not what we're hearing ...

Here's why I ask:

My father is almost 80 years old - he loves classical music. For Christmas, I bought him an expensive new tuner (Sangean HDT-1) for the sole purpose of listening to WRTI classical 24 hour programming on their HD broadcast. He lives over an hour from me. On Wednesday I went over to his house to set-up the new tuner.

The tuner seems to work fine. At 4pm, we listen to WRTI HD-1 and have the regular classical program. We give the tuning adjuster a tap, and it shifts to WRTI- HD-2. Voila -- we get jazz. We easily switch back and forth between classical and jazz. At this point, I headed home …

BUT -- at 6pm, WRTI-HD-1 switches to jazz. My Dad gave the tuning adjuster a tap, and it shifted to WRTI- HD-2 (which should be classical). And voila -- he gets ... jazz. OH NO !!!

We double-checked this at 7pm, in case the transition takes time. Nope. Still receiving jazz on both HD signals. This was true on Wed 1/9, Thu 1/10, and Fri 1/11 (we only hooked it up on 1/9).

I'd be suspicious that my Dad (79 years old) was doing something weird -- but he switches easily between classical and jazz on WRTI HD-1 and HD-2 during the day. At night, no matter what he does, there is nothing but jazz.

Can you help -- take a minute to double-check and let me know what is *really* being broadcast this evening ?

Or any other ideas to unravel this mystery ?? The people at WRTI are friendly, but say they have heard no other complaints …. But I don't think there are really thousands of listeners on their HD-2 channel …

Thank you.

I can only tell you what I did. I recieved NOTHING in HD on my BA Receptor, despite outdoor am & FM antennas.

I reboxed it and gave it to my brother in Limerick, PA for Christmas. It's a toy. Unless you live in line of sight of the transmitter, it's nothing more than a power robbing (42 watts!), glorified clock radio. That HD was a High Disapointment

I just tried it, 9:40pm on Monday night. WRTI-HD1 is Jazz. WRTI-HD2 is classical. I got my dad an HD radio so he can listen to KYW on FM to get rid of the static on WYSP-HD2.

WRTI-HD1 is the same as WRTI analog (all the HD1s are simulcasts of the main analog station). 12 hours of classical 6a-6p, and 12 hours of Jazz 6p-6a. WRTI HD2 is the exact opposite: Jazz during the day and Classical at night. So, with HD, there's always one WRTI Jazz and one WRTI Classical, but which is which depends on the time of day.

I know that. Read the original post...

That's exactly what I need to know to troubleshoot.

There really must be something that my Dad is doing wrong in the evening, that he manages to do OK during the day. I have tried (repeatedly) coaching him over the phone. It looks like I need to take an evening and drive out to Marlton to see what's happening.

Thanks for the reassurance that the broadcast is really working fine. It seemed far-fetched that they wuold neglect to make the HD-2 switchover, but ... there aren't that many buttons to push or things to do wrong on the tuner, so I was suspicious.

A nice snowy evening for a trip through center city and on to Marlton ...

PBF1: No, radio's fine. It's just isn't sensitive, even for analog reception. Bro says it works "ok" at it's new home, about 15 air miles from Roxborough Farm. He gets 5 HD stations from Philly.
